Woman Kicked out of Ladies Room

BEVERLY HILLS -- A female songwriter says she was thrown out of the ladies room at the exclusive Beverly Hills Hotel because she was dressed like a man.

A tearful Tanya White says she was "shocked and humiliated" when she was forced to leave the woman's bathroom and escorted off the hotel's premises, even though a friend confirmed to hotel security she was, in fact, a woman.

The incident happened on September 23, 2007 when White was at the hotel for a birthday party for friend and actress LisaRaye McCoy.

'I felt under attack. What began as beautiful night ended up as one of the worst nights in my life. Ever since I was forced to leave the restroom, I have felt nervous and scared about using a public restroom," White says.

She has hired a lawyer, Gloria Allred. MSNBC is referring to the incident as the "Crossdresser Controversy."

1. well... it is confusing
If you walk into a women restroom and discover a man (or somebody that looks like a man) it is somewhat disturbing. What if he is a violent sex offender?

9. What if a friend vouches for the woman, and she's
kicked out anyway? This is definitely valid litigation!

13. wtf?
Shaking my head here.

What if you walk into a women restroom and discover a woman? What if she is a violent sex offender or violent person?

Anyone dressed "like a man" is scary? WTF is "dressed like a man"? Are all men scary?

14. I think a man in a ladies room would be out of place.
And I wouldn't want my daughter alone in a restroom with him. Would you?

16. fwiw, my nieces go into unisex restrooms all the time, so did my son.
How do you know a person is a man? Do they have short hair, or wear a cap, along with a suit, or jeans/flannel shirt? This was a person "dressed as a man" who had someone vouch for her, and was no threat.

I don't see a reason for restrooms segregated by sex either, always seemed odd to me and I've never had problems anywhere where they weren't segregated.

43. I wasn't speaking about this person, since she was clearly a woman.
Are you talking about unisex bathrooms at college? I'm not aware of others, except for single-person bathrooms.

But I've heard too many cases of girls or women who were raped in bathrooms to feel comfortable about unisex bathrooms in general. Remember the little girl who was raped in the bathroom at the casino in Nevada? And there have even been girls raped in the high school bathroom. It's a place where a girl or woman could be alone and vulnerable. There's no reason for men to be in there.

46. There are others, both in USA and in other countries.
Having visited family in France many are unisex and they feel having both sexes waiting in line to use the stalls (which are totally enclosed, floor to ceiling) is normal and safe enough for all.

15. I can see where s/he was coming from
We do have separate men and ladies restrooms so it would seem odd to many of us to walk into one and see someone of the opposite sex.

Then when you add the 24-7 MSM tales of murder, etc., I can see how some would jump to the worst conclusions.

It's wrong to stereotype men or even to stereotype what a woman should look like, but in reality, that's just how humans are.

That being said, the guards crossed the line when they continued to eject the woman even after it was clear she was female. THAT is where the discrimination comes into play.

19. Thank you and "she".
intheflow and muserider can vouch for me as they have met me. But I was wearing jeans, so maybe my wide hips and boobs were padding and I'm actually a man since they didn't inspect my genitals.

"dressed like a man", and continuing to eject her after it was clear she was female. I'll get into my dislike of sexually segregated toilets at some other time.

20. Penultimate? That implies that there's one even better,
which is probably not what you meant. You may have meant "preeminent".

Normally I eschew grammar police work, but in your case, I'm happy to make an exception. :hi:

31. and the rest of her career?
A Fearless Advocate for Justice and Equality

Gloria Allred is the most famous woman attorney practicing law in the nation today, a tireless and successful advocate whose high-profile legal battles on behalf of victims whose rights have been violated have led to many landmark precedent-setting court decisions and hundreds of millions of dollars which she has won for her clients.

When a high-profile legal case hits the airwaves, we have become accustomed to seeing Gloria Allred in some key role as attorney or commentator. But this nationally-recognized advocate has built her pioneering career on much more than O.J. Simpson and Amber Frey. As a tireless crusader against discrimination in all areas of our lives, Allred’s legal reach has been wide and long. For the past three decades she has played an integral role in combating injustices and winning new rights especially for women and minorities.

Fearless lawyer, feminist, activist, television and radio commentator, warrior, advocate, and winner – Gloria Allred is all of these things and more. Voted by her peers as one of the best lawyers in America, and described by Time magazine as "one of the nation's most effective advocates of family rights and feminist causes," Allred has devoted her career to fighting for civil rights across boundaries of gender, race, age, sexual orientation, and social class.

so now, if we aren't in low-cut, completely revealing little tops and mini skirts, we can be escorted from a public restroom? and in beverly hills, for heaven's sake? all those hollywood types? something seriously wrong here.

12. How does one dress like a man?
Hmmm, got to think on this.

Um, well, I put one pant leg on at a time? do women do this differently?

Hmmm, maybe it's the shirt button thing, but my girlfriend wears a lot of my shirts. Besides who really looks at the buttons anyway.

I got it, I do this backflip thing to put on my underwear. I've spoken to several of my friends and they all say, "oh yeah, my GF never ever does the backflip thing".

So there you have it, men backflip into their drawers and women don't.

Whew! I'm glad that is all cleared up!

the security guard is a moron.
