CA SUPREME COURT REJECTS STAY ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE RULING>>

CA Supreme Court rejects stay on same-sex marriage ruling.»

The California Supreme Court “rejected a bid to freeze” last month’s ruling on gay marriage, “paving the way for same-sex couples to begin walking down the aisle as soon as June 17.” Opponents of same-sex marriage sought to stay the ruling until after the November election, but in a 4-3 ruling, the court rejected their efforts. Yesterday, a constitutional amendment stating “that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California” qualified for the November ballot.

2. That's excellent!
:woohoo:

Although I'm frankly delighted for the men and women now (finally) able to access rights long available to hetero couples, I have to admit also to a certain pleasure in knowing that this will infuriate the rabid RW masses.

Congratulations to California for doing the right thing!

4. NOT jUST THAT
but: it can be argued that the ballot measure, if passed, can't be used to nullify marriages granted between June 17 - November.

6. Whoa! I didn't even think of that!
Cue the RW "protest squads" gearing up to impede same sex couples' access to JoPs for the next five months...

7. It gets even better
Rachel Maddow (or someone on her show) says that the right of marriage, once granted, will be so difficult to justify taking away that the ballot measure itself can be thrown out as unconstitutional.

That's how the Supreme Court threw out the last law banning interracial marriage some 30-odd years ago. At the time of my birth, my parents' own marriage was illegal in some states.

It blows my mind every time I think of it and this is exactly why I support gay marriage. Equal means equal.

It's a great day to be alive! Hooray for justice! etc.
:woohoo:

10. Yes, Loving v. Virginia fell under the Full Faith & Credit Clause
in the U.S. Constitution.

The Lovings were married in D.C. in 1958. They moved to Va. and were arrested as violating the Racial Integrity Act, which prohibited interracial marriage.

The Full Faith & Credit clause states that all states must respect the laws in all other states. IOW, you get married in one state, you move to another state, your marriage is not invalidated.

The gay marriage situation is exactly analogous to the Loving v. Virginia case.

I am a lawyer, but I don't play one on TV.

5. That is terrific news!!!!
Now we just have to pray that it does not get defeated on the November ballot. I don't know enough about the electorate in California and I am worried. But it is looking good so far.

Now, this straight-for-equality (and proud PFLAG member) can help plan her friends' wedding.

Also, we now go to fight the odious amendment - Californians, please go to www.equalityforall.com - and sign up to volunteer.

9. OH NO
this is going to be an expensive summer. I know 4 gay couples who started planning their weddings a couple of weeks ago. most of these people have been together for years, do they really need a big wedding? of course they do.

lets all work to defeat the obscene anti-marriage initiative in November.

11. Damn! June will be half over!
Who gets married in July? Too hot.

How nice it must be for some people to finally be worried about little things like this ... invitations ... flowers ... catering ... seating arrangements ...

JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

CONGRATS TO ALL THE NEW BRIDES/GROOMS !

:rice::confetti::flowers::Champagne::cake::party:

And good luck to those of my friends/family/colleagues still waiting "their turn".
