Dish Or DirectTV? Both have Free Speech TV
I'd love to start receiving Free Speech TV and Link TV. I'm going to have to go to satellite and drop the cable. Fellow DUers, what do you recommend, Dish or DirectTV? (I think only Dish offers them both).

2. I Considered Direct TV A Few Months Ago, And They Didn't Have FSTV or LINK TV
If they do now, great. I'd give Dish the edge, if for no other reason, than that they had it FIRST.

6. Direct does have those channels because when I switched I called
DishNet to ensure that I could receive them from Dish. I have to purchase the higher end premium to receive them, but they are available.

Link TV is channel 375 on Direct TV.

17. 9415 is FSTV and Link TV is 9410 on Dish Net.
I've been switching between the 2 this weekend because both have had some really good programming on!

I really like that Democracy Now airs a half hour earlier on Link so that if I get interrupted I can try to pick up where I left off in the following half hour when it airs on FSTV. :hi:

3. We dumped DirectTV when Ruppert Murdoch took over and have
had DishNet for the past 2 yrs. or so. There has been some excellent programming on Link TV this weekend.

I used to have cable but Dish network is much better. No complaints at all and I think it is a superior service. Awesome remote too.

18. We have Dish
and are happy with it. Only problem we've had was a few weeks ago when some snow built up on it. Involved a ladder, a broom and a trip to the hospital. (OK - kidding about the hospital). Haven't heard about Free Speech TV and Link TV. I've been busy lately and not paying much attention to the teevee in general, so I don't know if it's part of our package.

19. I cannot contribute to Rupert Murdoch's coffers
so I have Dish Network, dropping DirecTV like a hot potato at the first sign of Murdoch's involvement with its takeover. FSTV and Link TV were bonus incentive to make the switch - along with IFC as a basic channel with the Dish package and local network channels (not available with DirecTV at the time I changed providers).

I just found this article:

Earnings News Launches EchoStar
Investors bid up shares of the satellite-TV outfit Thursday after its quarterly profit topped expectations

Updated: 10:00 a.m. CT March 2, 2007

EchoStar Communications (DISH), the operator of DISH Network, has managed to keep adding subscribers in spite of bruising competition. The Englewood, satellite-TV service said Mar. 1 that its profits rose more than expected during recent months.

Net income totaled $153 million for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2006, compared with $133 million during the corresponding period in 2005. EchoStar's profits came even as the whole satellite TV industry has dashed headlong into a future where cable companies offer phone, TV and broadband service combinations .

21. I went to a Home Show years ago
and there was a company that installed both Dish & Direct. So I asked them which they thought best as I was going to drop cable. They suggested Dish over Direct and that was the choice we made. I have been happy overall with it. Price just went up a bit and we have had some problems that required service and service charges over the years. But it seems to work okay for me.

22. Direct TV does not have FSTV, Dish has both Link and FSTV. CurrentTV
is another worth watching, but it is on both. Direct TV is Al Gore's project and features short videos from viewers: http://www.current.tv /

Another important channel is the Documentary Channel which is only on Dish: http://www.documentarychannel.com/main/index_new.php

i had dish for several years before switching to directv- there really is no cpmparison as far as picture quality...but- i thought that the way that dish has the channels arranged is much more logical.
