Iraq Death Toll ‘Above Highest Estimates’
BAQUBA - The real number of the dead is far higher than even the highest declared in death tolls, many Iraqis say.

A study by doctors from the Johns Hopkins School of Health in conjunction with Iraqi doctors from al-Mustanceriya University in Baghdad, published in the British medical journal The Lancet in October 2006, estimated the number of excess deaths as a result of the occupation at above 655,000.

Just Foreign Policy, an independent organisation “dedicated to reforming U.S. foreign policy” offered an updated total of 1,213,716 at the time of this writing.

On Sep. 14, 2007, Opinion Research Business (ORB), an independent polling agency located in London, produced a figure of 1,220,580 deaths as a result of the invasion.

Other officials also offered bleak assessments.

New burial grounds are found often, and the dead are usually not recorded.

So George, do you want to remind the people of Iraq about their "debt of gratitude" they owe you?

1. I have been suspecting this for a long time.
I can't express how much I hate the fact that we began this war and continue to wage it, despite having elected a Democratic Congress two years ago. I saw Vietnam up close and dirty. Then I came home and joined the peace movement. This time, when there was talk of war, the sights, sounds and smells of Vietnam came rushing back to me and I got into peace activism before the first bomb fell. I know a lot of vets who followed the same path I did.

Now we're off destroying another beautiful land and its people. Why can't this stupid country learn?

4. We lose 3,000 out of 300 million in one horrific day
And our nation is so traumatized that we let the most pee-your-pants scared people decide for the rest of us how to conduct our affairs for the next six years. The Iraqi people lose 1.2 million out of 30 million over the course of an illegal invasion and four year occupation, and we expect them to be okay with it.

American arrogance and hubris is stunning, just stunning.

9. Whatever the word is beyond "stunning", that would be it.
I've thought exactly your post since 2002, and I still can't get over how arrogant and "ubermenschen" we are. The equivalent of a 911 attack daily on Iraq...and we shrug our collective shoulders.

God forbid we ever suffer a fraction of what we've dealt out to others around the world. 911 would be a "little mishap" in comparison.
