Let's list the nation's WORST Newspapers
My nominee is The Buffalo News - This sorry excuse of a publication isn't fit to wrap the mercury laden fish dredged from the waters of Lake Erie.

Check out the response to this blog entry regarding Karl Rove: http://buffalonews.typepad.com/opinion/2008/06/extension-of-re.html#comments

5. Late entry...
...the Florida newspaper controlled by the $cientologists.

I forget which one it is, but I remember reading about one that censored criticism of the dangerous cult.

4. San Diego Union Tribune
Nearly all the articles come from the news wire and are not even written by their own staff. It's pretty fucking sad.

8. Any small town paper
Whose primary purpose is to publicize the doings of the power brokers in town while ignoring the other 95 percent of the population, the sort where the editor got his job by marrying the daughter of the publisher, the sort where news consists of community and church group meetings.

By the time I was 12 years old I was planning a violent coup to take over my local rag and put in place someone who could use proper grammar.

That racist old coot Jimmy Griffin. Carl Paladino, Chris Alf and Larry Quinn.

19. Second on
the Dallas Morning News. Right-wing rag that only publishes "news" after it's been approved by the Dallas establishment.

Interestingly, the smaller Dallas-area paper, the Star Telegram (of Ft. Worth) can be surprisingly good at times.

20. The Daily Oklahoman was named worst paper in American by both the American Journalism Review and
the Columbia Journalism Review in the same year a few years back. And they were both right. That newspaper is horrible. It is owned by the Gaylord family, who own tons of property in Oklahoma City and Nashville and who are extremely conservative. But it's not just their politics that are suspect--their ethics are as well. They run campaigns about various local issues without disclosing that they have a financial stake in the outcome. As an example, there was once a big debate about whether or not the city would approve a new "Bass Pro Shop" (complete with all kinds of financial incentives) in the then-newly revitalized "Bricktown" part of downtown. The Oklahoman vigorously supported the plan, and never once shared with the public the fact that the same people who owned the newspaper also had a stake in Bass Pro Shops.

So the politics are right-wing and their ethics are suspect. But they top it all off with a ton of sloppy writing, an insufficient copy-editing staff, and all around shoddy journalism. Perhaps its improved in the three years since I left Oklahoma, but I doubt it.
