Scott McClellan Does Comedy Central -- Colbert Explores 'Media Culpa'

By E&P STaff

NEW YORK Scott McClellan guested on "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart on Monday night, but the best lines of the night came a few minutes later from Stephen Colbert. He opened his "Colbert Report" by asking why McClellan was so upset that reporters were not doing their jobs in the run-up to the Iraq war. "What is McClellan complaining about?" he asked. "They were doing HIS job!"

Later, in his "The Word" segment, he discussed the journalists' need to defend themselves from the charges that they botched the pre-war coverage. He labeled this "Media Culpa." Who could they hire to spin their defense? Why not someone who is good at it and is now out of work -- Scott McClellan.

Earlier, Stewart had grilled McClellan about his claims that his former boss, President Bush, did not consciously deceive the public on Iraq. Stewart argued that, from day one, he and his advisers knowingly kept the truth from the public -- "a sin of omission," he said. "It's the difference between pre-meditated murder and involuntary manslaughter," he added.

McClellan responded by referring to the "culture of Washington" but Stewart called that a cop-out phrase. A few hours before that, McClellan endured getting shouted at by Bill O'Reilly on Fox News for allegedly helping those who hate America.

5. I caught a little of the O'Reilly interview.
Of course, it was awful. (It's O'Reilly.) When I tuned in he was berating Scott for allowing all the other interviewers to "use" him to bash bush, which Scott denied. This seemed stupid, so I went back to KO. Ten minutes or so later there was a break, so I tuned back to O'Reilly. First question I heard: "But WHY did you let them USE you that way? Can you tell me WHY?"

What an utter ass. This is the biggest thing on TV? Good God.

2. He's running the full gauntlet.
He did okay on O'Reilly, and didn't back down when blasted with the bombast.

He's getting beat out of one gang, and into another, whether he knows it or not.

3. I thought Stewert did one of the best interviews

only because he spoke of willful intent - whether someone be guilty of murder or manslaughter, depending on the intent.

I sat here in awe of Stewart because I've always considered the deaths stemming from Iraq as murder. And I've always considered the media being complicit in murder. Not all see it in that way, though.

Edit: spelling

6. Jon was great...
one of the best interviews yet, unlike our "liberal" media".
He did not let Scott of the hook, nor did he try to shout him down.
I thought I saw a glimmer of remorse in Scott when Stewart made him face over and over again that it was a conscious decision to deceive us all. He made him acknowledge the intent which lead to the murder of millions of innocent Iraqs and thousands of our own.

9. BOth Stewart and Colbert were brilliant last night
Stewart argued that, from day one, he and his advisers knowingly kept the truth from the public -- "a sin of omission," he said. "It's the difference between pre-meditated murder and involuntary manslaughter," he added.

And that's the WORD media culpa. :D
