Cheney Makes Incest joke About West Virginians
***UPDATE*** Akers reports that Cheney has now apologized for his West Virginia incest joke:

Vice President Dick Cheney has apologized through his spokeswoman for making an offhand joke during a speech at the National Press Club Monday stereotyping West Virginia as a state prone to incest.

Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride tells us, "The Vice President's offhand comment was not meant to hurt anyone. On reflection, he concluded that it was an inappropriate attempt at humor that he should not have made. The Vice President apologizes to the people of West Virginia for the inappropriate remark."

Mary Ann Akers of the Washington Post asks if West Virginia was just handed to the Democrats when Dick Cheney made an incest joke at West Virginians' expense:

6. Exactly. Republicans are always making incest jokes about W. Virginia.
That isn't news, it's expected.

7. He noted that he had family on both sides with the same last name
"and we're not even from West Virginia!"

or something like that. I, being a West Virginian, can crack jokes about this place. But that blow-hard money-grubbing fascist who has been getting richer off an energy policy that includes raping WV for her coal can kiss my ass. Go Fuck yourself, Dick Cheney.

11. this world will be better...
when all begin to realize that we are cousins to each other. There is no getting around that. Even the myth of Adam and Eve makes it explicit that we descend from only 2 people. Well that may be a slight stretch but anyone doing genealogy will note that time and again they find a distant relationship to some famous, infamous or nefarious person in history. In order for the 6 billion people on earth not be related is if Genesis and the scientists using DNA have gotten it all wrong. Either throw out the religious explanation and the scientific insights or accept that human beings are connected to each other and are indeed related. Let's hope no one finds that Cheney may be related to Henry VIII and Richard III who were noteworthy for their ruthlessness and power hunger. The name Cheney goes back to the Norman Conquest and were members of the minor nobility, but not always on the good side.

5. Like hell he did.
Dick Cheney apologized my ass. His spokesperson apologized. He said he didn't have to apologize because he wasn't running for anything. So what's changed? Nothing. His office thought it expedient because people got pissed.

He's sorry, all right. But he's not apologizing. And I sure as hell don't accept.

8. Where's A. James when we need him?
Joe could still learn a lot from his uncle - aside from the getting impeached part.

A James would have been in front of the White House with protestors and a Today Show crew this morning.

12. I don't want to hear a word of outrage from some of you here.
After the WVa primary, I distinctly remember a good number of you making similar jokes.

In fact, jokes of this nature regarding the entire South abound on this board, despite the fact that the majority of us here live in and/or are from the South.

17. You can poke fun at yourself.
What I object to is people from up North who've never been here (or who have simply just driven through) and who think we're all rejects from Deliverance.

Honestly, have you not seen that on this board? The South is not a monolith.

23. Well, I'm in Tennessee and I do get offended.
It's like the only place it's OK to be biased against is the South.

I, for one, am tired of it.

I also have a theory regarding Southern jokes and Republicanism. The South didn't vote as a block for Republicans until 2000. I think it's because people here constantly heard Northerners talking down to them and they equated the North with Democrats or liberalism.

While the Republicans absolutely have not done squat for the South, they have given lip-service to the idea that we, in the fly-over states, should not be ignored.

BTW, I don't care if Southerners make fun of Southerners. We know our lifestlye and the jokes make sense. We aren't as mean spirited.
