For those headed to DC: will you help us who live here vote?
I am a veteran and a citizen of the US.

I live in the District of Columbia, where I understand many of you are headed soon.

I know you have a lot on your plate: the war, the economy, etc. But please do remember that those of us in DC have a special problem: our votes don't matter.

If any of you meet with your representatives, please please PLEASE find a spare few seconds to push for DC congressional representations. We're taxpayers and veterans but we don't have a voice in the people's House. It will only change when the rest of you demand that it does.

While you are in town, there are some things to check out:

1. The new portrait gallery, at the "Gallery Place/Chinatown" stop on the red and green lines
2. Shakespeare in Washington, happening all over the place, particularly the Smithsonian museums and the Kennedy Center
3. The DC War Memorial, between Lincoln and FDR, right on Independence

And please, please, please urge your Congresscritter to recognize that we are citizens and end our taxation without representation!

3. Will do.
Had a great discussion with my fourth grade students regarding this issue today. We were talking about Patrick Henry and the whys of his famous speech protesting taxation without representation. They were really amazed when I told them about DC's lack of representation. They get it. Congress should too.

4. Always, friend! Always.
I supported Home Rule for DC back in the 70s. I've supported every measure since that will fully enfranchise my fellow-citizens in the District. I will continue to do so. I have expressed this support and urged support for such measures to every congresscritter in every district I've lived in. I will continue to do so.

Nothing, in my view, is more fully illustrative of the ironic shortfall of our nation to live up to our expressed principles of justice, fairness, and representative government than the disenfranchisement and continuing lack of representation of DC citizens.

Don't give up!

militantly,
Bright
