HATE WARNING!
Edited on Mon May-26-08 07:22 PM by ColbertWatcher
I remember last Memorial Day when the GOP managed to get people angry at "the French" (the Freedom?) because they weren't (allegedly) showing enough gratitude for "our saving their asses in World War II".

I remember how they were even able to get older people to spew hate toward the French with crap like "move the graves out of Normandy" or some such shit. I never saw an apology from the GOP haters even after it was revealed that the French gave us the land on which the Normandy cemetery sits.

And now, today, this Memorial Day, I see this story on fark, about a group of French people, Les Fleurs de la Memoire (Flowers of Memory), who volunteer to lay flowers on the graves when the Americans' own families can't do it.
"...she mustered up her best French and asked if flowers could be placed on her uncle's grave. Two months later she received a photo of his grave in the mail."

As I read this story, I am reminded of the sacrifices our fathers made and how grateful the French (as well as our other allies) for those sacrifices. And I'm reminded of the GOP and their narrow-minded hate. And how they use it to blind their followers to history and reality.

So, to cleanse our palette of the GOP hate that I introduced in this thread, join me in a toast of whatever you got to the people of France and others around the world who remain our friends despite the damage done by the GOP.

À mes amis!

2. It's such a civilized act, laying flowers on the graves...and a hopeful
sign that some in the world haven't gone over the edge...yet. K&R

3. It is.
But, that's the French for you.

They are not how the GOP depicts them. I guess no one is.

14. The GOP's lambasting the French is a slap in the face to WWII vets (of which was my father).
Merci, Les Fleurs de la Memoire; friends of my gathers are buried at Normandy. :patriot:

15. And the French helped us during our Revolution, they also gave us the Statue of Liberty.
Viva La France.:patriot:

P.S. I believe Freedom Fries is a more appropriate name as the high fat content will most likely free you from the burden of life.

17. France was our first ally
And our most important. The OP has it right and we should not forget- the Republican Party as a whole participated in this and not one of them should be let off the hook.

18. Without the French..
we'd still be taking tea in the afternoon and singing "God Save The Queen".

There was a time in this country when many people named their children "Lafayette". My beautiful city of Washington D.C. owes it's grace and beauty to the Marquis.

The GOP haters will always find somebody to hate, that's what they do best. As their dark lord would say, they can go fuck themselves.

20. It worth remembering that
there are numerous cemeteries in France for fallen Americans, beautifully maintained with much respect and care, thanks to those French citizens that the RW were criticizing.
