The Movie "Recount" Has Reminded Me of Something From That Night
I remember that night very, very well. Two months earlier, I got a new computer, and I had internet access. I remember going to bed knowing full well that the Republicans would steal that election from Gore, and I remember pointing to my computer and saying to myself, "that box is our only hope. The media and the entire establishment cheated to get Bush this "victoy" and the only thing that stood between us and total authoritarianism is that computer and the internet. The establishment overlooked the power of the internet."

A few months later, DU was born.

1. Here is my funny memory, disregarding the terror for a minute:
My son /daughter- in law / and 7 1/2 yr old grandson were staring at the screen at 1 am.
The little one, in the corner of the floor of the kitchen, in a lotus position leaning toward the small TV we had pulled into that room said:

"And I thought this was going to be boring".

2. I spent much of those crazy days on an online board kind of like this one...
only Dems and Repukes were logged in together and we would really go at it - arguing like madmen back and forth. It was a "Delphi" forum called "Politics" if I remember. Definitely makes what goes on here as tame...in comparison.

3. Al Gore and the internet. He saves us again. Gingrich & Co. didn't bank on the internet when they
plotted the takeover.

9. No, they counted on Orwell.

And they got it with the paperless ballots. In fact, they combined the internets and Orwell with the way they disappear things from the tubes.

For instance, can you find a quote from Dubya before September 11, 2001 where he said the Middle East wasn't that important to him (or some such thing) I remember him pooh-poohing the ME, but damned if I can find a quote online.

(ON EDIT) And I don't mean from a blog, I mean one of the major newspapers that covered that golf-cart-riding moran.

4. Was it Murdoch's plan?
To buy up all the media outlets he could get his hands on and brainwash people on a massive scale?

If so, I don't think he anticipated the rise of the internets and the democratizing counterbalance it has provided.

8. It reminded me of the purged voter rolls.
And how they only found out about them after it was too late to do anything about them.

10. My hint was the day of the election, when I worked at a minority polling
Edited on Mon May-26-08 02:02 AM by Lorien
place in Orlando. I was standing outside of the poll passing out Dem literature and watching the only other white person there, a COP, walk up to voters and say "what ya gonna do when your boy loses? you gonna CRY when your boy loses?" while sneering in their faces. They tried to close down the poll an hour early, then I was swarmed with voters saying that the people running the poll all said that they had come to the wrong place to vote-and that the right place was across town. With no time to lose we called in every church bus in the area to bus voters to the "right" polling place, but the cops wouldn't let the buses leave unless they could produce a taxi license. :grr: :nuke:

My second clue that it was stolen outright was when I marched on Tallahassee on inauguration day and told our story to journalist after journalist. The ONLY reporter who would listen to me and write about my experience was Greg Palast of the BBC. No one here in America wrote about what happened to us that day. The media was fucking in on it too.
