TV's ‘Laugh-in’ comic Dick Martin dies in Calif.
Damn.

"LOS ANGELES - Dick Martin, the zany half of the comedy team whose "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" took television by storm in the 1960s, making stars of Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin and creating such national catch-phrases as "Sock it to me!" has died. He was 86.

Martin, who went on to become one of television's busiest directors after splitting with Dan Rowan in the late 1970s, died Saturday night of respiratory complications at a hospital in Santa Monica, family spokesman Barry Greenberg said.

"He had had some pretty severe respiratory problems for many years, and he had pretty much stopped breathing a week ago," Greenberg said.

Martin had lost the use of one of his lungs as a teenager, and needed supplemental oxygen for most of the day in his later years..."

3. Oddly, I was watching a "Best of Laugh In " DVD just a few days ago.
Martin's reaction to Tiny Tim was priceless.

Goodnight, Dick. You were a treasure.

11. Dick Was A Brilliant, Funny Man
In the early 90's, I worked on a radio show where we interviewed classic movie and TV stars. We caught up with Bob Hope, Buddy Ebsen, Don Addams, Bob Newhart and many, many others...and let them just talk about themselves and their lives. Sometimes it led to some funny/embarassing moments...like the time we asked Tiny Tim his reaction to the death of John Candy in '93 and he said "served the bastard right...he drank and smoked too much".

One of the funniest and best shows we did was with Dick Martin. At the time Laugh-In was long in the memory banks...before DVD sets...and he was glad someone had remembered the show and went into a lot of funny stories on how the show came together and then seemed to have a synergy all its own. Martin did a lot of the scouting of the talent for the show...doing the comedy clubs and was responsible for bringing Goldie Hawn onto the show...that helped really launch her career.

Say Goodnight Dick... Thanks for the laughs and memories...
