1. Damn, that sounds like fun

Several of the original Munchkin actors used to own custom-built homes on Hillside Drive in La Jolla, CA where I grew up. That part of the street was called Munchkin Land; the houses were scaled for little people. It was an important part of the high school "cruising" route.

The last time I drove through the area, there was only one Munchkin house in its original form. The rest had been either razed and replaced with large custom homes, or "supersized". It's really very sad.

4. But it was released in 1939 - still cool though
I got to see it on the big screen back in 1989 during its 50th anniversary year. It was at a theater in Houston (the River Oaks) that had opened in 1939. They showed 1939 films at 1939 prices and gave all the money to charity. They sold out all the shows! If I remember correctly, they also showed Wuthering Heights and Goodbye Mr. Chips. It was very cool to see them on the big screen.

5. My mom saw it when it first came to her town in Iowa in 1939

It was the very first color movie she had seen. She was five years old.

I love the movie. I quote it all the time. For example, when someone asks me if a computer is really dead, I assume an official posture and say "It's not merely really dead, it's really most sincerely dead!"

Last I heard some developer was trying to buy it, level it and add on to the strip center. I don't think that happened though....

8. Bruce always puts on a good show

This was his 22nd event in Omaha. It was a packed house. I'll post some notes tomorrow.

9. Buddy Ebsen (Jed Clampett, Barnaby Jones) was supposed to be the Tin Man
But the aluminum dust used in the makeup made him sick enough to have to quit the film.

His replacement, Ray Bolger, used an aluminum paste instead.

10. Wow, what a treat!
I named my car Dorothy - she is red (like the slippers in the movie, not the book) and when I click on my w(heels), she takes me home, unless of course, we're on the yellow brick road to Oz. She and the Scarecrow hang from the mirror, and I tease the older half that some day he can change his Tinman's oil (a silver car of undetermined mpg) and join me in the hope he'll get a heart. Life is a journey...ToTo(ly) magical with the exception of twisters, bad Wizards behind curtains, sleepy poppy fields, and flying monkeys. Now, if it were just so easy as pitching a bucket of water to rid ourselves of the WWW.

The real "big screen" will never be in the living room.
