But damn if you don't see a lot of the sentiment that to be American is to be a WASP. The idea that to have any other cultural heritage somehow makes you less American. People seem to completely cast aside the ideals that really represent the heart of America (ahem the enlightenment) in favor of ethnocentric tribalism.

The countries of northern and western Europe are more affluent and have higher standards of living than the USA. What would they be seeking here? Poverty? No health insurance? Higher crime rates?

I don't believe that we should let everyone just come on in. But a lot of the resistance really springs from the fact that "those people" are not "my people". It's disgusting.
