Damn! I almost got shot today. Why do parents give little kids guns?
A little boy out practicing shooting nearly shot me this afternoon.
A bullet whizzed past my head and splashed the stream I was fishing in.

His Mom had taken him out shooting. He was shooting near my parked car,
but, it seems, it did not occur to them someone might be in the area.

I did catch my dinner, and I'm glad I did not catch my last breath!

1. You would think if they saw a parked car and they were
responsible about things, they would look for the location of the person that drove the car before they started shooting.

6. The deputy went over there from here. They tried to beat a hasty escape,
but I ran after them, yelled to stop, and got their names.

8. Good. I hope she was well and truly frightened by her mistake.
Those are the lessons that stick. And thank goodness you came out okay, in the bargain, too!

3. She should've taken the boy to a safe shooting range. Frankly, I have no sympathy for her.
If you had died, that kind of stupidity should at least earn her the charge of negligent homicide.

9. Too bad that gun wasn't taken away from her on the spot
to be returned only after she had completed a course in firearms safety--with her son, ideally.

Most gun owners are responsible. We need protection from the witless ones like this woman.

4. as someone who shot guns as a kid, I also had to learn gun safety
before I was allowed to shoot it. Same with archery.

7. Same here, but it's always scared the hell out of me...the number of
stupid and irresponsible idiots there are out there! I remember reaming out an idiot I worked with because they said they always shoot at a bush that's moving because it was probably some game in there! YEAH!!! And it also might have been some human hunter using the bush to hide in, huh?

There are stupid people everywhere. Some have guns, some drive cars, some are even your bosses!

10. Now *that's* real logical & critical thinking....
No, *that's* just another one of those irresponsible gun owners you *hear* about.

You *don't hear* about the responsible one because... well... they're responsible... and stuff.

Hooboy! :eyes: Disconnect at it's very best....

13. Well since being irresponsible can be fatal . . .
I mean, come on. It's not like losing your car keys.

17. That's what I'm saying... you don't hear about the millions of *responsible* gun owners
Edited on Fri May-16-08 12:53 AM by Ghost in the Machine
who go every day *without* shooting someone. It's the stupid, irresponsible ones that make the news. Same with drivers. You don't read about the millions who made to work and back home safely every day.. you hear about the crash victims & fatalities.

I just can't get past the disconnect that makes people make a statement like that. They think just because a law is passed, suddenly these millions of otherwise responsible, law abiding gun owners are going to turn into cowboys or desperadoes.

It makes about as much sense as saying allowing gay marriages will affect heterosexual marriages...

Did that help make my point clearer?

:hi:

18. Other than online
I don't know any responsible gun owners. I do know dozens of people affected by gun violence though. That's where I'm coming from.

And when I am smart, I stay out of gun threads.

19. I understand where you're coming from, too
Believe me, I do.. I just don't think that ALL gun owners should be punished, and have their weapons taken away, because of the low minority of stupid ones...

1. All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4. Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.

Its really very simple.

14. I have to add, don't give deadly weapons to children. They can't drive cars
or vote, but they can legally use deadly weapons?? Go figure.

Children are not capable of the mature behavior and decision making that deadly force requires, PERIOD!

12. This is a good example of why
anti-gun people are the way they are.

They hear of incidents like this and they generalize to all gun owners.

Some people are idiots. Some gun owners are irresponsible idiots. You've certainly given us an example of irresponsible idiot gun owners.

Guns are potentially hazardous and fatal. Each and every incident of careless gun ownership that leads to death of some innocent is what anti-gun people point to when they decry guns in general.

For the record, I don't own a gun, I don't see any need to own one, although I concede that truly responsible gun ownership is possible.

15. Maybe if you worked where I do
You would never want to see anyone own a gun.

This city is literally exploding with gun violence. I don't know many responsible gun owners.

16. I have had to confiscate that weapon, to be returned with proof of completion
of a firearms safety course. Of course, my first instinct would be to either kill them or call the police.

That is completely inexcusable.

21. Why in God's name
does a child need to "practice shooting?" Are people completely insane? (Like I need to ask.)

If that had happened to me, I'd have beat the shit out of his parents, and been happy to do some time for it. Some people have to have common sense beaten into them.
