Rape and murder in West Africa. A personal story;

My father was a fisherman (strong and stout) in Ghana, a very good man. My mother was born in the US (thank G-D) but her husbands family lived in Ghana, so she was sent there as an early bride. Our village was on the Ivory Coast, a place that no one would ever think that anything bad would happen. One night the guerrillas came to our village, and my father was killed defending us. My sweet mother was raped. Soon after my aunt sent me to live with the Shante tribe until I was old enough (13) to be sent to the Americas.

16. It's not colonialism...

it's the mantra throughout most cultures that women are not equal with men. It reduces women to property and near-animal status. Rape, IMO, is foremost a lack of respect issue. Many guys, including many people I know, thing of women as something to be conquered. Sexism is the silent scourge throughout the ages; seemingly universally accepted and unchallenged. thankfully, I was raised in a family of strong, independent women who taught me early on that a penis didn't make me better, it was my mind and what I did with it.
