Reid: "It is time for Republicans to stop carrying water for the President"
Edited on Fri Mar-02-07 04:49 PM by bigtree
Reid Demands Senate Republicans Not Block Critical 9/11 Legislation

Tells Senate Republicans to Stop Protecting the President and Starting
Protecting the American People

WASHINGTON, March 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Senate Majority Leader
Harry Reid today released the following statement demanding Senate
Republicans put the security needs of the American people ahead of the
political needs of President Bush and drop their plans to block legislation
to implement the recommendations of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission:

"The same President that initially opposed the Department of Homeland
Security and initially opposed the 9/11 Commission has signaled that he may
oppose to the most sweeping improvement to America's homeland security in
the past several years. Unfortunately, it seems that Senate Republicans are
again standing by his side. Twice already this year, Senate Republicans
have chosen to give a green light to escalate the war. Now, in yet another
effort to provide political cover for the President, they are threatening
to block the 9/11 bill.

"It is shocking that, after making the world more dangerous through
their inaction and indifference, the President and Senate Republicans would
even consider filibustering or vetoing a bill that would make America more
secure. The President and Republicans in Congress have asked the American
people to wait six years for the security they deserve. It is time for
Republicans to stop carrying water for the President and start working to
make America more secure. The American people deserve the tough and smart
homeland security policies that will keep them safe, and Democrats will
implement the recommendations of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission. We hope
Senate Republicans will forgo their threats to block this bill and instead
join us in making America more secure."

3. Gee Why don't you just call fucking Limbaugh and get your
talking points direct from him! Christ what is wrong with these people. They even have to go to the righties to see how to attack the righties. This is embarrassing.

8. Your opinion has been noted... and filed
He couldn't come up with a better phrase than the exact phrase Limbaugh used after the election? My nephew has just been notified that he is being re-deployed and my best friends son is being shipped out tomorrow. The stakes are going up for me again and regardless of your sad attempt to insult me I'm going to fucking hammer on every single Democrat that doesn't act like fucking lives hang in the balance.

4. Blah blah fucking blah
Reid and Pelosi have shown they are as spineless as the rest of them. Let's have a non-binding suggestion that perhaps we might be upset, Harry.

6. that's a goddamn lie
there's NOTHING the critics have suggested which would be any more effective against the republican obstruction. The only thing his critics have shown they are good for is shooting their own mouths off.

7. BREAKING: Bigtree loves Harry
Your position is noted, Bigtree. But they're still spineless and this disastrous war still kills our soldiers fighting of Bush's lies.

13. I know Reid hasn't carried any of that water
Edited on Fri Mar-02-07 05:20 PM by bigtree
he deserves credit for his statement. *It doesn't serve anyone except the opposition to knock him down for this strong statement. If you have a way for him to dislodge the republican opposition on these 9-11 recommendations I'm sure he'd like to hear them, but his statement is a powerful rebuke from the leader of our Senate majority in the face of that opposition. He's not set in concrete. He's moving the agenda forward. Unfortunately, he's in no position to dictate everything in the narrowly divided body. How about at least a smidgen of scorn for the REAL opposition???

15. Oh, come off it
a) I didn't say anything about Reid specifically. The Senate is so closely split that his power is extremely limited. I was pointing out that there are still a lot of Dems who carry Bush's water, which is a completely accurate observation.

b) Re: showing scorn for the "REAL opposition???" You're absolutely right, I really just LOVE the Republicans in congress. That's why I want them to stand up in some real, non-symbolic kind of tangible opposition. You got me. Guess the mods can delete my account, now that you've exposed me as a right-wing operative. Back to the Free Republic with me to brag about my subversive exploits on DU.

12. Non-Binding Resolutions and Whiny Ineffectual Statements
Why not try ramming the beast with all your might, Mr. Reid?

You may not emerge victorious, but there's dignity and honor in expressing the will of the PEOPLE.

14. That's what's pending
Feingold says he's tightening it up with them to prevent the proposals from becoming a vehicle for Bush to continue. There are several proposals that he's managing, trying to reconcile, and will bring to the Senate floor when he's done with the 9-11 bill:

"The Senate Democrats' legislation would try to limit the mission of U.S. troops in Iraq by revoking Congress' 2002 vote authorizing Bush's use of force against Saddam Hussein.

One draft version supported by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., would pull out combat forces by March of next year and restrict U.S. troops to fighting al-Qaida terrorists, training the Iraqi security forces and maintaining Iraq's borders.

Democrats have acknowledged that the proposal does not yet have enough votes to overcome GOP procedural obstacles and a veto by Bush. But they are hoping the latest effort will draw enough GOP support to embarrass the president and keep the pressure on."
