Rep. Clay Joins Ron Paul, Barney Frank On Pot Bill
WASHINGTON

Ron Paul. Barney Frank. Lacy Clay. What do they have in common?

One word: Pot.

Clay, a Democratic congressman from St. Louis, has signed on to a controversial bill to legalize the possession and not-for-profit transfer of small amounts of pot.

Paul, a libertarian Republican from Texas who is often at odds with his party, and Frank, a liberal Democrat from Massachusetts, introduced the bill last month.

In a written statement, Clay called the legislation a “reality check” that would free up federal prosecutors to focus on other crimes. Supporters say individual marijuana users are not a threat to public safety.

The bill applies only to federal drug laws and does not affect state marijuana enforcement. It legalizes the possession of up to 100 grams of marijuana and the not-for-profit transfer of up to one ounce. It also reduces the penalty for public marijuana use to a $100 civil fine.

“We have wasted billions of dollars on a phony war on drugs that is filling up our prisons and failing to stop the flow of illegal narcotics into this country,” Clay said.

The legislation does not allow growing, importing or exporting marijuana. It has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee as well as the Energy and Commerce panel.

5. Not to complain, but it should allow for growing also, that would
take the profit part right away, it's just a plant.

9. Yes, it will, but I agree with another poster; let's get this one done and
then work toward the logical next step.
And get RID of this stupid attitude against industrial hemp while we're at it, for pete's sake...
