McCain: I made serious mistakes and did things wrong when I was in prison
Mike Wallace 60 minutes interview from 1997

Transcript from Salon: http://letters.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/02/27/hamas/permalink/ac2c8980e752327c1654e3cac1143926.html

WALLACE: (Voiceover) People who know McCain well say he can hold a grudge. He also has a legendary temper. But if McCain can be hard on his friends and even harder on his enemies, he can also be very hard on himself.
Sen. McCAIN: I m--made serious, serious mistakes and did things wrong when I was in prison, OK?

WALLACE: What did you do wrong in prison?

Sen. McCAIN: I wrote a confession. I was guilty of war crimes against the Vietnamese people. I intentionally bombed women and children.

WALLACE: And you did it because you were being tortured...

Sen. McCAIN: I...

WALLACE: ...and you'd reached the end of the line.

Sen. McCAIN: Yes. But I should have gone further. I should have--I--I never believed that I would--that I would break, and I did.

The Vietnamese offered to release him so they could use him as propaganda. They were going to tell the other POWs that 'McCain got to go home since his dad is an Admiral. The rest of you don't matter so you have to stay'. McCain refused. So he is wrong on about every political issue under the sun but you have to respect the fact that he turned down an offer to go home because it would be used to torment the other POWs.

There is enough ammo against McCain to defeat him in the general election w/o bringing up his POW experience. We don't have to be Rovian. Those tactics can backfire anyway.

5. Solitary confinement can do strange things to a person.
I know this, first-hand.

Torture me, any day. Just don't shut me away.

7. Yeah, he made mistakes when he was held as a POW.
But that was almost 40 years ago and it doesn't explain why he thinks torture is OK now. I agree that the Dems shouldn't bring up his captivity, most Americans think he's a hero, but someone has to point the hypocrisy of his statements.

11. This is not how we should campaign against McCain
No one can judge him for whatever he did while being captive and tortured. There is much to judge him on since. Boo!
