As someone pointed out today, he spoke of "Czechoslovakia", which hasn't existed for 15 years or more.

There were the famous "Lieberman Had To Whisper in My Ear" bits a few months ago.

There have been many more.

Is anyone tracking these?

These may well not be the mistakes of a fully capable person who makes understandable mistakes. These could just as easily be signs of the onset of some form of dementia.

I will avoid calling him a crazy old coot.

1. I suspect now that the primaries are over and he is going to be forced on to the campaign trail
full time, he will be making more and more errors.

2. Around the time my grandmother
started to show signs of dementia she kept asking for her sister, Eva: "Where is Eva?" "Why isn't Eva here?" "Did you show this to Eva?"......

Eva had been dead for years.

8. Did he make similar errors when younger?
On hindsight, it should have been clear that Reagan was developing some form of dementia, because of the constant 'flubbing' of lines by someone *who had been a professional actor*. Actors need not be wise or good problem-solvers but they do need a good verbal memory. Reagan's frequent verbal errors under the circumstances suggested some form of decline.

On the other hand, some people never have a good memory or verbal ability and always flub their lines (Quayle! Dubya!) So it need not mean dementia - perhaps just, in the immortal words of Quayle, 'not to have a mind' in the first place.

9. It's not necessarily dementia
It's normal in old age for a lot of people.

However, I'm not sure I want someone as old as McCain in the White House. I have a lot of friends who are his age. They are wonderful people. There isn't one of them I'd want as president.

The funny thing is that you wouldn't offend most old people by telling them that. A few would get ruffled, but most know they're just not up to the task. Hell, when you have to have state dinners at 4:30, just to get the early-bird special, you need to hang it up.

At least it's not Fred Thompson, who apparently thinks the Soviet Union is still around.

13. We'll get more mileage out of "clueless," "hot tempered," and "out of touch" rather than dementia
or senility, which might garner him sympathy.

He's just a mean, nasty neighbor who never comes out of the house. He's been my senator for years and he gets lots of mileage out of sympathy from the irretrievably ignorant (which is a sizable portion of the AZ voting bloc).

Which he is.

And then let them insinuate any damned thing they want.

that ripped off Native Americans for millions and millions and millions of dollars and people ended up, including him, in federal prison."

As to your question, I haven't seen it, but with the help of others, I might take up the task; something along the lines of the DUzy Awards.

More satire than actual McCain gaffes, but nonetheless very funny...

16. Brian ... find out my position on contraception
Edited on Wed May-07-08 04:40 PM by KSinTX
I added MY ABSOLUTE FAVE to it: The Africa-AIDS-condom interview (http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/03/16/mccain-stumbles-on-hiv-prevention/)

Q: “What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush’s policy, which is just abstinence?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “Ahhh. I think I support the president’s policy.

Q: “So no contraception, no counseling on contraception. Just abstinence. Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “You’ve stumped me.

Q: “I mean, I think you’d probably agree it probably does help stop it?”

Mr. McCain: (Laughs) “Are we on the Straight Talk express? I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I’m sure I’ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception – I’m sure I’m opposed to government spending on it, I’m sure I support the president’s policies on it.”

20. John McCain;
"like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. ‘Give me five bees for a quarter,’ you’d say.
Now where were we? Oh yeah - the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..."
