Our economy is in the toilet because of the Democrat controlled Congress.
At least, according to a freeper on my veterans' board.

Here is what he posted:

Remember the election in 2006?

Thought you might like to read the following:
A little over one year ago:

1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%.

Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006 we have
seen:

1) Consumer confidence plummet;
2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $3.50 a gallon;
3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value evaporate
5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;
6) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure. ;

America voted for change in 2006, and we got it!

Remember it's Congress that makes law not the President.
He has to work with what's handed to him.

3. Exactly!
I almost shit myself when I read it.

I had typed up an angry response and was all set to hit "send" when I stopped and thought, "What's the fucking point?". These people believe what they want to believe and nothing I can say is going to change their minds.

I am tired of wasting my breath.

5. All those things took years of planning...
the repubs have had control almost 12 years if you count the house/senate under Clintons last term.

America is a very large strong economy. Tthe amount of damage that has been done took years of careful repub planning. It doesn't happen in 12 months.

And fyi, having control of the hosue and senate without veto override majoritiy means that the Dems have only had the ability to control what legislation is brought out of committee (sometimes not even then if repubs obstruct). They don't have the power to 'make" the president sign anything. And this latest president has signed and addes signing statements anyhow.

As usual, the repubs put out a whole lot of emotional nonsense that is not backed up by knowledgs.

7. Our Economy...
Edited on Mon May-05-08 10:10 AM by N4457S
...is in the toilet because the deregulation of our financial system created a wildly unsustainable bubble that finally burst. Also, many of the bills we've made over the past twenty five years are finally coming due. A lot of it goes back to the Reagan days and also to Greenspan's opening of the tap in 2001 in the wake of 9/11.

Who said this? Hank Paulson!

We are in for one bastard of a recession. Main Street always lags Wall Street by about six months. The pain on Wall Street is beginning to wane because of the bailout(s) and layoffs but shit flows downhill and it's gonna run right down the street in front of your house.

We have to have a 1980-1982 style recession to wring out all these imbalances and excesses. There's no other way.

by the Republican-controlled Congress in 2006... whose chickens are coming home to roost now in 2008.

I bet we'll be seeing this in a lot of letters to the editor around the country now.

13. His Information Is Conveniently Wrong
Gas sold for more than $3 as a national average before the new Congress was sworn in. The unemployment rate at 4.5% is not in braggingly good territory, and it was actually 4.7% at that time. And consumer confidence was at a 2.5 year high after being at a 10 year low before that, while Repubs held both the WH and Congress.

So, he was wrong, wrong, and wrong. The rest of his screed is irrelevant.
The Professor

17. Sigh--looks like the sheeple got a memo or something
Eerily similar missive from my local newsrag's LTTE yesterday (below)--made my blood boil. Who's circulating this nonsense? Rush?

The writer of "We can't afford another four years" (April 26 letter) has put the blame for all our woes wrongly on the Republicans. Has he forgotten that sweeping Democratic victory in 2006, two years ago, that put the Democrats in control of the Congress, with promises to fix everything that ailed us? All the issues he pointed out that are worse now are due not to "Republican rule" but due to the ineptness and the inability of the Democratic Party to ever get anything done. Democrats are real pros at pointing out what is wrong everywhere, but miserable failures at ever doing anything about it. Even their two current presidential hopefuls argue and quibble over all sorts of issues, while neither of them has any historic track record of accomplishment of any sort. So please do what that writer advised at the end of his inaccurate assessment, and "think about this when you pull that lever in November."

SWEEPING DEMOCRATIC VICTORY? Apparently the nuance of a majority of a certain number of seats is lost on morons like this. But I suppose we should get used to it, because that's the garbage we're going to be hearing when a Dem becomes president. "Fix it! Fix everything!" (tap tap tap) "It's been five minutes! Why haven't you fixed anything? See? Democrats suck! Waaahhh!" :eyes:

20. "Think about this when you pull that lever in November:"
Think about what? Whether we want to start performing surgery on America (Obama) as opposed to putting a 50-caliber shell clean through it's already limbless and life-supported torso (McDump)?

You gotta love those Republicans. Always willing to take another inch, as long as a Democrat doesn't get into office.

All of those things are indeed facts. The main fact that is missing is every Democratic bill to address any of those issued has been either blocked by Republican filibuster or vetoed by Bush*
