Poll question: Should Pot Smokers donate organs
Edited on Sat May-03-08 01:24 PM by mitchtv
It seems clear from the news that if you smoke pot , or even use medicinal marijuana, you will be denied a place on the reansplant list. It is also clear that pot smokers' organs would be accepted as donations.Seems hypocritical to me, besides unfair. I think donation should be "off the table" as long as MJ is verboten

1. Yes... especially to Republicans
They need to get high instead of drunk and pharmaceutically drugged out. Maybe they relax about their sexual hang-ups too.

4. Better yet would be to donate, but to specify that it can only go to those who are excluded
because of former or current pot use.

That would both make a political statement and take away the power of life and death from those mired in the superstitions of the past

6. They should be marked as such, and potential transplant patients informed.

8. I'd rather have transplanted organs with a little THC in them
than residuals of most pharmaceutical drugs. Of course, if someone was using marijuana medicinally, I'd probably want to know WHAT they were using it for, if I was getting their organs.

If someone's smoking dope for glaucoma, for example, his or her organs could be in good shape. But if they were using it to avoid nausea from chemotherapy, they shouldn't probably be on the donor list. I think there was a story about that kind of thing in the news recently, where three people got cancer from transplanted organs. Don't remember the rest of the details.

10. The person who will die without a transplant didn't make the law,
and I wouldn't take my anger about this law out on them -- they had nothing to do with it, and are in dire need of help. So I'd still donate, law or no law.

But laws prohibiting pot smokers from receiving donated organs are pure and utter bullshit, and dangerous bullshit at that. These laws have no more rational basis than prohibiting folks who've been convicted of misdemeanors or gotten speeding tickets from receiving donated organs.

If anyone's familiar with any organized efforts to overturn these laws, I'm all ears.

13. considering mj is one of the safest drugs you can take
legal or otherwise, this shouldn't be a problem... but the gov has done a good job of making people believe that smoking pot turns u into a killer or lazy sack of shit.

I could have a strong opinion about "yes" or "no," but when I get to the way you said it, I'm no longer sure which stands for which.

19. Organ transplants are for people with health care,
as someone without health care, I'm glad the pampered and privileged can do without herb-users' organs as well as my vegetarian organs!

20. "yes it is off the table" What does that mean?
"yes" sounds like they should donate organs. But "off the table" suggests "No" they shouldn't. huh?

21. Parts is parts
There is nothing inherently defective about an organ from a marijuana smoker.... No more and likely less than from a tobacco smoker..... Marijuana leaves are not processed and polluted with toxic chemicals as tobacco is...
When will people wake up and realize that the FEDERAL laws against marijuana use are unconstitutional? Once again this is an example of the FEDERAL government overextending its authority...

We would definitely not want to exclude them from donating their corneas!
