Bill Maher: Christians want sex to be as SCARY as possible.
Christians crusade against cancer vaccine

By Bill Maher

March 2, 2007 | New Rule: If you don't think your daughter getting cancer is worse than your daughter having sex, then you're doing it wrong. Last year, science came up with a way to greatly reduce cervical cancer in young women. It's a vaccine that prevents women from getting HPV, which is a sexually transmitted disease that acts as a gateway to the cancer. And the vaccine is so good, it could wipe out HPV. I keep a stockpile near my hot tub, and I can tell you, that tingling sensation means it's really working. And I'd say that even without the endorsement deal.

Now for the bad news: Not everyone is pleased with this vaccine. That prevents cancer. Christian parent groups and churches nationwide are fighting it. Bridget Maher -- no relation, and none planned -- of the Family Research Council says giving girls the vaccine is bad, because the girls "may see it as a license to engage in premarital sex."

Which is really a stretch. People don't get the vaccine for typhoid and say, "Great, now I can drink the sewer water in Bombay." It's like saying if you give a kid a tetanus shot she'll want to jab rusty nails in her feet. It's like being against a cure for blindness because it'll encourage masturbation. It's like being for salmonella poisoning in peanut butter because it'll discourage weirdos from spreading it on their ass and calling the dog.

And yet, Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma is another one who's anti-vaccine. He thinks if a teenage girl feels a little prick, she's gonna want to feel a whole lot more. But HPV shots don't cause promiscuity. Tequila shots do. Everything your kids buy is sold to them with sex. The vaccine doesn't make them want to screw: MTV does. And hormones. And having moron parents they want to escape from. Hey, when you're 15 years old, breathing encourages sexual activity.

But let's be frank: These Christian groups aren't just against the HPV shot; they're against family planning and condoms and morning after pills -- they want to make sure sex is as dangerous as possible, so that kids know, if they sleep around and get an STD, that's God teaching them a lesson.

(Just like they don't really give a damn about fetuses, they just want women punished for having sex.)

12. It's not just the Religious Right
At least one of the DUers against the vaccine believes that people who get HPV simply weren't cautious enough, and that they deserve it.

Anything to protect those precious bodily fluids, I guess.

14. some of us are very excited
Some people are paranoid about the efficiency of the vaccine or its safety, others distrust science in general, and then there is the very small and vocal minority that believe it will lead to women wanting to have sex :eyes:

22. I wanted to have sex long before the existence of this vaccine
And I bet most (normal) people did too. In fact, I never gave much thought to HPV at all except in the context of protecting myself from any and all diseases. But the existence of such diseases has not made me celibate. It just means being very careful. And EVERYONE needs the information and tools to protect themselves.

24. The bigger question is whether the gov't should make it mandatory.
Because it could be seen as the typical republican handout to corporate America, in this case Merck. HPV vaccines become the law, and Merck makes billions.

29. But you can't compare small pox to HPV
Small pox is a highly contagious, disfiguring and sometimes fatal disease. HPV is not. About half of all women are walking around with some kind of HPV virus and don't even know it. Only a small percentage will develop cervical cancer because of it.

The vaccine is only effective against two strains of HPV. It's not effective against other types of HPV known to cause cervical cancer.

It's the same reason for the war on drugs pot.

There are two ways our society can function. One is the way it always was. The way the hippies also envisioned it. And then there is the way the corporative society, modern society wants it. It's about money.

We live like humans, side by side, as equals. Barter. A level playing field. OR we live like kinds and slaves. The banker does nothing and earns a kings ransom, and the slave works to death for meager existence.

Anything human is a threat to modern society. War is ok. Torture is ok. Violence on tv is ok. But love, affection, health care all threaten the hierarchy.

edit- I forgot to say why the war on drugs is part of it. But I think it's obvious. People who are stoned are more akin to the natural human behaviour than those who prey upon each other. The Roves and Limbaughs. Hm, Limbaugh. There goes that theory.

17. To quote Bill Hicks:
"The people who are usually against these things like sex and pornography are generally fundamentalist Christian conservatives who also want us to be fruitful and multiple. Boy, I bet they walk a tight rope everyday! How do we be fruitful and mulitply but not think about it?"

20. Scaring people about sex has worked so well for Catholics.
Well, kinda. It didn't work so well for me or my wife or any of the other ex or current Catholics I know. But, I did discover that my eyesight remained unimpaired and I didn't have to shave my palms.
