Name Max Cleland Secretary Of Veterans Affairs
The excerpt below is posted with the full permission, even encouragement, of the author, who wants his essays to be read by as many people as possible.

From the Huffington Post:

Name Max Cleland Secretary Of Veterans Affairs

By Brent Budowsky

It should be the mission of a lifetime and Democrats and Republicans should call on President Bush to do it:

Make Max Cleland Secretary of Veterans Affairs and it will send a powerful message of support to our troops and vets.

If Max Cleland is named, within hours the treatment of every wounded soldier will improve because every official will know that the new sheriff is in town.

Max Cleland is the most qualified person in America for the job. Never again will wounded troops be punished by early morning inspections that are represensible and sick. Never again will wounded troops be threatened with retribution if they take their case to Congress or the press...

Brent Budowsky is a Contributing Editor to Fighting Dems News Service and a former aide to Senator Lloyd Bentsen and the House Democratic Leadership with Bill Alexander, then Chief Deputy Whip. Contact him at brentbbi@webtv.net.

4. You are correct. Good point!
He was the administrator of the United States Veterans Administration under President Jimmy Carter, a fellow Georgian, from 1977 to 1981.

6. Max was first person Carter met with after inauguration; Max started walk-in offices
throughout the country for vets with emotional/psychological problems. That is, they didn't have to get admitted to VA Hospitals to get some mental health help.

That early meeting was where Carter asked Max to head up Veterans' Administration.

He's got more courage & common sense in one single damn atom than the entire Bush administration combined.

5. Max Cleland is a not only a great man, he is a good one.
There's no way in hell Bush would appoint him, unless pushed hard against the wall and acting out of desperation.

7. Max was
The Secretary of Veterans Affairs after it became a cabinet position. He's the most inspirational person I've ever met. What Rove and Chambliss did to him in 2002 was a travesty. And they still had to rig the election to get him out of the Senate. Max calls em as he sees em.
The Department of Veterans Affairs is separate from Walter Reed (aka Bushwitz). It comes under the Department of Defense.
Just having Max on the scene would have a lot of Bush appointees soiling their drawers, especially with Democrats able to issue subpoenas.
But it won't happen because that would send a signal that Jesus H. Bush made a mistake with Nicholson.
