Poll question: A discussion about discussions...
When is it appropriate to reply to an Original Post of a thread with statements about food?

Note:
Unless an Original Post is directed to a specific audience, it's difficult to see how an Original Post could be an example of interpersonal disrespect. An Original Post is in at least one sense like words scrawled on a sidewalk: no response is required. The words might say any number of things, such as, "Have a nice day" or "Watch your step" or "You're thinking something and I doubt that it's correct."

Of course, an Original Post might convey a disrespectful attitude directed at any individual or group mentioned in it.

2. Is this in code?
I recognize most of the words, but there is something missing making me think I've gone Republican, oops, I mean crazy.

6. If you eat a lot of them at one sitting, do you get sleepy?

I read that rice cakes have a high glycemic index, like sugar but perhaps not as hazardous to one's teeth.

5. It is appropriate when the topic is connected with food
which it could be in many ways. There have been threads on mass starvation caused, in part, by converting grains into ethanol. There have been threads about obesity/diabetes and other health concerns. There have been threads asking questions about food safety, raising food, etc.

A reply involving food would be an appropriate response to any OP discussing one of these topics.

8. Is it in some cases appropriate to ask...

for an explanation of how the topic of the Original Post is connected with food? I mean that the question would be posed to a DU member who posts a reply about food when, to some DU members, the connection between food and the Original Post is not evident.

9. Is it appropriate to subthread a thred on another topic like, say, food?
If a subthread is begun on another topic, is it appropriate to reply to the reply and actually then make it a subthread, the asking for an explanation being the first branch off onto the subthread instead of merely a reply?
