Somebody call a Waahmbulance - Far right feeling left out
Leading American conservatives are fed up with President Bush and the Republican establishment, and they don't give a toss for the party's 2008 presidential front-runners, either.

At this year's Conservative Political Action Conference, the annual, three-day gathering of the far right and its leaders, the mood is feisty and disgusted — but not just at Hillary Clinton, this time.

"We as conservatives need new leaders," Richard Viguerie, the conservative father of political direct mail told hundreds of cheering conservatives in a Washington ballroom. "Just because the Republican Party has a death wish doesn't mean we have to go down with them."

For a party that grew and achieved in large part by force of its unity, this rift between conservatives and the Republican power structure is profound. It could be either the ruin of the GOP or the re-making of it.

10. The difference being that our party has spent a few years in the wilderness
We are willing to put up with the weaknesses of a Reid or a Pelosi because we are aware that there isn't all that much else we can do. The Right wing, on the other hand, has had the White House, the Congress (up to 2006) and the Supreme Court, plus the delusion that everybody really agrees with them - they are now on the downward cycle but are not going to see any reason to be less demanding.

Which is why McCain or Guilliani will have some tough times ahead of them, no matter how much the party leaders love them; the party faithful see them as sell outs (because they are, well, sell outs from their perspective).

3. I'd really like for them to prevail and get what THEY'D call a "real conservative" nominated...
Then they can LOSE - LOSE LIKE ALL 50 STATES, and we can put this "conservative" bullshit behind us for a long, long time.

Seriously. I'm tired of them having both ways. They elect a Republican Senate, Congress and President, yet they still whine.

I say: give the people an up or down vote on conservativism in November 2008!

8. There does seem to be a certain lack of enthusiasm
Coming from republicans - especially the wingnuts - about the GOP contenders.

The various big "christian" names like Pat and Jerry don't really have a problem with Mitt. They know he'll toe the party line - be anti-abortion, anti-female rights, pro-big business, and suck up to them. Hell, he's already started by flip-flopping on every position. Pat and Jerry know that he's their dog.

The purists - the students upset about Mitt; the contributors to the 700 Club and Falwell's organizations - are the ones that don't want him. These are the fools that have been sucked into believing Pat and Jerry but have gone on even further than they when it comes to not compromising on their religious beliefs, and even if Pat and Jerry do eventually throw their support on Mitt, they're going to be disheartened and not excited about having to vote for Mitty.

9. "We cannot afford to let Mexico turn us into a two-language nation,"
Edited on Fri Mar-02-07 11:39 AM by Cerridwen
"We cannot afford to let Mexico turn us into a two-language nation," (Phyllis Schlafly) said, as her audience roared approval and banged on tables in support.

--snip--

...this is the first year in memory in which the organization didn't invite the chairman of the Republican Party (Sen. Mel Martinez) to speak — a remark that drew a huge round of applause.

Amazing, isn't it? She must really hate some of Thomas Jefferson's ideals

Thomas Jefferson
A Bill for Establishing A System of Public Education
24 October 1817

--snip--

And for the establishment of Colleges whereat the youth of the Commonwealth may within convenient distances from their homes recieve (sic) a higher grade of education,

--snip--

21. In the sd Colleges shall be taught the Greek, Latin, French, Spanish, Italian & German languages, English grammar, geography antient (sic) & modern, the higher branches of numerical arithmetic, the mensuration of land, the use of the glob es, & the ordinary elements of navigation. (emphasis added)

--snip--

edit to add: I would note here that although Jefferson uses the word 'College,' based on the context of the complete document, he's talking about what we, today, might refer to as 'high school.' Earlier in the document he talks about a first level of education and the 'College' he describes is the next level up - so, either middle school or high school.

11. I don't know why they're complaining.
They've cheered Bush every step of the way for the last 6 years. All 30% of them are still solidly behind him. The Republican Party didn't leave them. Sane Americans left the Republican Party.

12. Third Party...Or No Party???
Several months back I predicted Gnewt would sit in the wings...using his perch at the AEI and the Religious Right to try to take over the Repugnican party...the reasons for Gnewt to avoid getting into the primary/money game now and to have options available later. He cited in "delaying" his plans to announce as he saw this shift coming and all but said he was expecting a "nomination to be handed to him"...now he never specified the Repugnican party from all my checking.

That "big tent" Raygun built is folding like a deck of cards thanks to the mismanagement of this current regime...and now the knives are out...but this is just the beginning. Virtually every Repugnican (those who still dare to admit it) I encounter is pissed at boooosh and the national Repugnicans. The fundies feel abused, the fiscal conservatives feel sold out and the moderates finally woke up to the smell of the shit and, while still stuck with the stench, have either opted out or become "independents". In this area, the Libertarian party has been very active...and I expect they'll be a bigger force to deal with on our local level in elections to come than the corrupt and ineffective state and national party.

If there was ever a time for a "populist" or third party candidate to emerge it will be next year and I suspect it will be from the religious right/neo-cons who Gnewt is banking on as his "mandate".

14. With any luck, they'll run away from the Republicans soon
and form their own, "Conservative" party ...

and the Repukes would have to rely on the $$$ of the billionaires, instead of them and the church ... and both would be trounced repeatedly by the Dems ...
