Young Blair's obscene gesture
02.03.07

It's the picture you were never meant to see.

This image of a young Tony Blair at Oxford University in the 1970s has always been closely cropped to show just his face or his torso from the waist up.

But now it can be revealed in all its glory, and it looks like Tony Blair wasn't as innocent as his fresh-faced appearance suggests.

The future prime minister was caught on camera doing a universally understood vulgar gesture.
Decked out in a boater and blazer, he is pictured making the rude sign surrounded by a group of white-trousered young men striking pretentious poses.

Perhaps it was a message to his future rival Gordon Brown, or the first example of gesture politics -or was Blair just playing his air guitar, at the time the picture was taken it was his band Ugly Rumours, rather than politics, that was his main concern.

The snap, which has been on display at Cheltenham College for many years, was taken at St John's College Archery Club in Oxford and was revealed on the BBC's Newsnight for the first time last night. Mr Blair has called it a 'picture that I wouldn't mind if I never saw again'.

It comes after an embarrassing photograph of Tory leader David Cameron surfaced two weeks ago. He was shown wearing waistcoat and tails surrounded by his fellow Bullingdon Dining Club members at Oxford.

The photograph, which backs up his elitist image, was said to be more damaging than cannabis-smoking allegations, which surfaced at the same time. Henley MP Boris Johnson, who was in the same Bullingdon photo, said the group went on to enjoy a debaucherous evening

4. It's not so universally understood ...
I'm *thinking* it's a gesture that simulates masturbation, but I'm not sure. Is my thinking correct?

6. Talk about an issue that is earth-shatteringly unimportant!
This one takes the cake. I'd as soon read about Brittany's haircut. Cripes! (As they say...)

16. I dunno but I love the photo (the style of it)
Like beatles meet the group of elitist wankers. Sure they were going for the beatles look.

I'm not a huge Blair Fan after he lent support to Bush's war, but he's not half as bad as our asshat.

18. I agree. Happiness and adventure just exudes. As for Blair
if you ever heard him plead the case on Iraq - it almost makes
you stop and think - hmmmm - maybe we should do it. Almost.

20. I have seen lots of teenagers make this gesture
I don't hold this against him. I do, however, hold his complicity in killing thousands of Americans, Brits and Iraqis against him.

24. LOL I don't mind seeing these kinds of photos of politicians
Politicians I like, and politicians I don't like too - like old photos of W. Somehow seeing them in their youth doing typical young things is refreshing.

It's irrelevant as far as politics go.
