Shut up, Shut Up, Shut up, The First what? Amendment?
So yesterday that bastion of freedom Glenn Beck had this to say about Olberman: “Hey, Keith, you’re not saving the world’s democracy; you’re killing it, my friend, by trying to limit the marketplace of ideas to only those that reflect your own.” Which I found hilarious, let's see which side is trying to "limit ideas" to ones that reflect their own or maybe to ones that will keep them out of trouble. ( I should mention that Beck on his show last night offered to take nude pictures of a US MAgazine reporter young enough to be his daughter, you can see the clip on C&L. She was stunned.

Lets Start With O'Reilly, I don't even have to list the quotes we all know so well, you know the ones that start with "Shut up, shut up, kill his mic".

How about Hannity: Hannity pounded on the desk with bullyboy fury. “You don’t have the moral courage to speak out and say, ‘Jack Murtha, be quiet until this is finished.’
http://www.newshounds.us/2006/06/01/fox_news_michael_reagan_and_sean_hannity_blame_democrats_for_haditha_massacre.php

Sean Hannity urged several voters--in particular one 21-year-old self-proclaimed Democrat--not to vote in the November 7th midterms. "Your vote doesn't matter anyway," he told them."
http://ostroyreport.blogspot.com/2006/10/sean-hannity-tells-voters-to-stay-home.html

Or Bill Kristol: It’s so irresponsible that they can’t be quiet for six or nine months and say the president has made a decision, we’re not going to change that decision, we’re not going to cut off funds and insist on the troops coming back, so let’s give it a chance to work. You really wonder, do they want it to work or not? I really wonder that. I hate to say this about the Democrats. They’re people I know personally and I respect some of them. Do they want it to succeed or not?

Or Ann Coulter:
COULTER: If people are going to use a personal tragedy in their lives to inject themselves into a national debate, I'm sorry, you can't just say, oh, we're off limits. Oh, now we're going to invoke the fact that our husbands died and you can't criticize us. They were specifically using their husbands' deaths and there were...

TUCKER CARLSON, MSNBC: But that doesn't mean they're enjoying it. I presume they're going home at night with their husbands gone, and their kids are there and where's dad? And it's -- jeez, it's so depressing.

COULTER: And so are the thousands of widows who are not cutting campaign commercials for Clinton. These women got paid. They ought to take their money and shut up about it

Now you guys know I could do this all day long, Find places where Republicans demanded that people "watch what they say", I'll just use my favorite quote from Ari Fleisher:

MR. FLEISCHER: I'm aware of the press reports about what he said. I have not seen the actual transcript of the show itself. But assuming the press reports are right, it's a terrible thing to say, and it unfortunate. And that's why -- there was an earlier question about has the President said anything to people in his own party -- they're reminders to all Americans that they need to watch what they say, watch what they do. This is not a time for remarks like that; there never is.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/09/20010926-5.html

Yesterday the teachers unions were told to shut-up. Soldiers who are recieving poor treatment are told to shut up. Then there was this little ditty from Ft Stewart:

"With the division heading into its third tour in Iraq, Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch said none of his troops will be allowed to retire, transfer, or leave after their enlistment expires without his approval." http://www.examiner.com/a-542300~Ft__Stewart_general_may_halt_departure_of_troops_set_to_leave_Army.html

So you served your time, did 3 tours in Iraq, your enlistment is up and you want out? Shut up.

Shut up, Shut up, Shut up. Um I have two better words for you "shut up folks" how about FUCK YOU! Make me shut up. I'd like to see one of you tough guy chicken hawks come meet me in public and make me shut up. You cowards. You want a war to see who actually supports the troops? You got one.

Oh and Glenn Beck, next time you want to take nude pictures of someone young enough to be your daughter, you may not want to make the offer on TV where every one can see what a creepy freak you are... http://www.crooksandliars.com/category/wingnuts/ (second post down)

5. You act like you've discovered something remarkable.

I don't disagree at all with the point you're making -- you're absolutely right. But then this is the way right-wingers and authoritarians have been acting all down through the ages, and it's not precisely a mystery. You would be well advised to study your own country's history, for example, and learn about how antebellum conservatives handled criticism on the slavery issue: with gag rules, rigged elections, and death squads. I am not making this up.

Do you know the reason so many people today think John Brown was some kind of wacky nutso terrorist? Because he scared the crap out of proslavery conservatives by being one of the only progressives in the country who actually dared to fight back. The proslavery crowd started killing freesoil men in Kansas, liked it, and found they could get away with it; then all of a sudden John Brown comes along and proslavery men who have been making threats against their freesoil neighbors start to die. They never managed to let that go or get over the psychological trauma it caused them, and they and their spiritual descendants have been waging a propaganda war against him ever since. Even here on DU some people would have you believe that John Brown's infamous murders of 5 proslavery men in Kansas happened for no reason at all, just out of the clear blue sky. Uh-uh.

Anyway, this crowd is just more of the same. They'll keep pushing and bullying until some angry progressive gets fed up enough to lay the smack down and shut them up-- and then they'll whine about how their rights are being grossly infringed by pushy bullying progressives, for no reason whatsoever at all.

On edit, clarified the final paragraph so no halfwit would think I was advocating summoning John Brown back from the grave with a broadsword.

7. Fair enough, dude
But I gotta warn ya you're gonna get awful dang tired in your life if you don't like listening to conservatives spewing hypocritical BS. It's about the only thing they ever do.

But ignore me anyway, I'm just a crabby old bag! :)
