80F at the end of *April* in Massachusetts
Yet most people act as though nothing is happening. Is it all down to BushCo's and corporations' refusal to face the facts, or what?

1. In the early 70s, one Easter Sunday in April was 94 degrees
I had to dig for a pair of shorts to wear around that day. It didn't last, though, and I think we even had snow flurries the next week. Those shorts parked on the bedpost until the following June.

It's happened before, in other words. Warm spells don't make climate change. Earlier last frost dates and later first frost dates do, and that is what is happening in northern latitudes.

It still hasn't all melted. Unbelievable. I went to bed last night and grabbed an extra blanket and thought it was weird to be so cold, now I know it wasn't me. Just too weird.

Do you have Obama people organizing over there? Do you feel like the info about Dem registration is getting out?

Cold, but sunny. The snow should pass if it's coming from this direction.

A friend of ours ordered a bunch of Obama stuff a while back so we are all set. I just think it's incredible how they don't overlook anybody. It's just what the party has needed. I am so excited. All I've seen so far is Obama signs and stickers.

44. So, Breeze, what should we pack for our May/June trip to MA?
In Portland, Oregon, it can be said that "if you don't like the weather, wait just a second!"

Yesterday on my outing, I encountered, not necessarily in this order -- sunshine, rain, wind, hail, snow, and one rainbow -- and that was just between 11 AM and 3:30 PM.

:)

Two years ago in May and June; I still had the heat on and it rained for 3 weeks straight!!

We had so much rain we had flooding and landslides. It was insane! But it could also be hot!

You just have to keep an eye on the weather. ;)

The day we packed up in Sudbury, MA -- March 31, 1998, it was 91 degrees!

I was wearing my bathing suit while the movers packed the truck.

My darling husband had put in one of the room airconditioners the night of March 30, while we slept on a mattress on the floor of our master bedroom.

We closed on the property in early April maybe the 1st or the 2nd.
The day of the closing it was sunny and 51 degrees. Maddening weather in the temperate zone on both coasts -- but we tolerate it because -- well -- we love each other.

I'm a hot-blooded woman married to a cold-blooded man!

Cordially,

39. What? Of course there are things a "sitting president" can do to respond to GW . . .
Edited on Mon Apr-21-08 09:21 PM by defendandprotect
Of course, "no one can fix anything immediately" ......!!!

There's a 50 year delay in GW before we feel the effects ---
Right now, we're approximately up to 1958 --- that is our activity up to that time has produced the
effects we are feeling NOW.

However, we have known for decades that we cann't burn fossil fuels any longer ---
so we need to NATIONALIZE our natural resources and take them out of private hands.

Additionally, we need to put ELECTRIC CARS on our roads, replacing the gas-guzzlers . .
If GM doesn't want to build electric cars then we can raise a corporation to build them and
subsidize both ends of it --- manufacture and purchase.

In five years we could replace every gas-guzzler.

Additionally, there are many diplomatic efforts to be made throughout the world ---
A world which better understands GW than America seems to ---

We need to rethink our entire way of life --- we need huge cultural change --- and certainly
that can begin with a "sitting president" --- !!!

A sitting president can also do a great deal about POLLUTION which is also doing great harm to the planet --- that is the POLLUTION over and above that which creates GW.

Our oceans are sickened --- our trees are dying ---

And, yes . . . GW can create snow and snowier and colder conditions ---

19. NOT Global Warming...
Climate Change! Here in the NW, we are predicted to have more extreme weather, not necessarily warmer weather.

Today, about thirty miles NW of Seattle, we had 35 degrees and blowing (but not sticking) snow at 11 am.

Higher winds, record high temps, and double the snowpack in the mountains (next year it could be the same or a quarter of the snowpack) so far this year.

23. I wonder who came up with the nice, pleasant-sounding term "global warming"
If it was someone in science, they revealed a tin ear for framing issues.

Of course, it *is* "warming" - in the same way an oven, switched on high, is "warming" until it reaches its limit.

(It looks like this thread provides evidence of anti-science attitudes at DU, which I bet are highly correlated with illiberal politics, whaddaya think?)

28. Actually I am.
Worldwide temps have not risen since 1998 and actually fell dramatically last year. Warming and cooling always go in cycles. We judge our ideal temperature against the backdrop of the last hundred years when the Earth has Billions of years of topsy turvey weather. Let me ask you this. If the earth was warming and we had no greenhouse gases to blame it on what would your plan of action be? Just curious.

30. My training is in science. You know, that evidence-based stuff?
When thousands of reputable scientists are united in saying that it's more than 95% certain that humans are causing the problem, then I accept that as being the most accurate representation of reality that it's possible to get at present.

I'm really not interested in playing any "what if it's natural" games any more than I'm interested in playing "what if it's unicorns" games. So if you want to play, either find someone else or get back to me when scientists unite in saying "never mind, false alarm".

31. Evidence based?
millions of years of warming and cooling are not evidence to you?
Yes a vast percentage of scientists have come forward in support of man based climate change but
many are backing off that claim now and many are taking a more balanced approach. Here's an evidence based question for you, how do you explain
the planet not warming for over a decade while we still have not lessened co2 output?

32. Yes, evidence based.
You provide no evidence for your claims, such as that "many" scientists have stopped supporting the IPCC findings. The greatest objections are that the IPCC reports have been inappropriately watered down by pro-corporate political influence.

Agreement came after an all-night session during which key sections were deleted from the draft and scientists angrily confronted government negotiators who they feared were watering down their findings.

...

Several scientists objected to the editing of the final draft by government negotiators but, in the end, agreed to compromises. However, some scientists vowed never to take part in the process again.

...

There was little doubt about the science, which was based on 29,000 sets of data, much of it collected in the last five years. "For the first time we are not just arm-waving with models," Martin Perry, who conducted the grueling negotiations, told reporters.

The United States, China and Saudi Arabia raised many of the objections to the phrasing, often seeking to tone down the certainty of some of the more dire projections.

41. GLOBAL WARMING is the original term for it ---
the first models of how the heat was being trapped were done under that name.

I think the attempts to switch to "climate change" make it sound like something normal ---

We should keep a label which makes clear that we are HEATING the planet ---

40. NOT climate change --- GLOBAL WARMING . . .
because that makes clear that we are talking about HEAT building up in the atmosphere which
creates chaotic conditions ---

Climate change sounds like something normal . . . ?
It's not ---

In certain areas where they have winds passing over water that is usually frozen, it picks up
the moisture and that increases the snow that falls as they pass again over land.

Same thing that is happening in the Arctic where the huge melts are going on --
the more the snow disappears and there is black water for the sun to heat up, the more
the melting increases.

22. another silly post linking climate change to an above average warm day
Guess what: the record high temperature for April 19 in Boston was 87 degrees and it was set in 1914. The record high for April 20 was 89 degrees and it was set in 1976.

Pointing to above or below average days as evidence of climate change is silly as has been pointed out many times. Climate change is real, but comlaining that its t-shirt weather in New England during the third week of April is not the way to prove it.

42. Unfortunately, this traces back to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution . . .
In the late 1800's they could look at the pollution and its effects on trees and the earth ---
So, yes, what you are seeing in 1914 and 1976 are traceable to "industry."

Meanwhile, we also exploded the hell out of the planet with nuclear weapons ---
do we really thing that has had no effect on our planet/atmosphere?

Besides the disgusting pollution everywhere ---NUCLEAR WEAPONS were exploded in the atmosphere and underground. Think that might contribute to a few earthquakes?

And for the height of suicidal insanity by the patriarchy/capitalists they also exploded nuclear weapons in outer space ---
Many think to try to knock out the Van Allen Radiation Belts --- !!!!
