Poll question: Which great historical figure would you support for President now?
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 07:49 PM by Quixote1818
Lets imagine the primaries are coming up and you have several of the most dynamic figures in US history running for president. Under our current conditions with Iraq, all our economic problems, environmental problems, terrorism, the problems of corruption and corporate corruption, New Orleans etc, who would you support and why?

On Edit: My apologies to the person who voted for Anne Richards. The other person got 1 vote just before I changed it to Anne Richards so I thought I should change it back and noticed it had another vote. Either way, someone was going to get disenfranchised . Sorry.

1. Can we add Eisenhower to the list?
I know he was a Republican, but he predicted all that's happening now - he warned us. I'd like him to come back and tear all of Bushco a new asshole.

16. His administration was responsible...
for overthrowing the democratically elected governments in Iran, Guatemala and Lebanon for American business interests for starts. He was not outspoken about McCarthy either.

3. I voted Franklin, but my first choice would have been Chief Joseph...
His maneuvers to avoid the Army during the run to the Canadian border with his tribe are still being taught in military schools. He had a great military mind and he had the heart of MLK.

IMO, he's one of the most underrated historical figures today.

11. Abe knew enough to stay out of foreign entanglements
such as the Trent Affair, which almost brought us to war against Britain. He was also wise enough to know that his powers were founded upon the Constitution, and when the SCOTUS ruled his temporary lifting of the right of habeas corpus in MD was illegal, he didn't shut down the court. He also made sure he had the best and brightest in his cabinet, even though three (Attorney General Bates, Treasury Secretary Chase, and State Secretary Seward)had been his rivals for the nomination, and he was able to get these men to work together to see the Union through.

14. Carl Sagan is still my first choice, buy MLK is second.
Carl Sagan / Richard Feynman 2008!

Sagan: I'll cut the deficit by billions and billions.
Feynman: Surely, you're joking Dr. Sagan.
Sagan: No, I'm not. And don't call me Shirley.

20. According to Thom Hartman,
Jefferson and Madison proposed an 11th Amendment to the Constitution that would "ban monopolies in commerce," making it illegal for corporations to own other corporations, banning them from giving money to politicians or trying to influence elections in any way, restricting corporations to a single business purpose, limiting the lifetime of a corporation to something roughly similar to that of productive humans (20 to 40 years back then), and requiring that the first purpose for which all corporations were created be "to serve the public good."

Boy could we use that amendment!

22. We need a reformer: Charles Dickens. Make changes to debtors prisons, child labor laws
I know, he's British and can't run for President. Although it wasn't stated that they MUST be eligible for office. All the same--they're all disqualified as they're all dead--although that didn't stop *.

Things are so bad in this country that we really do need reforming especially since credit card companies put people is a "virtual debtors prison" now. In some cases they even use credit reports against you on your insurance.

Wasn't it enough for the wealthy to get massive, undeserved tax cuts? Yet they keep demanding more. These tax cuts were used to offshore American jobs. Major reforms are needed.

Child labor laws: are needed for the world. It doesn't occur in the continental U.S., but the products of child labor are sold here. Reform it.

He knew how to avoid getting involved in an unwise war that others were pushing (see "Adams and U.S. Policy to France").
