RUN AL RUN!!!-Rolling Stone Magazine: GORE- Ideal Candidate-Won In 2000 & Opposed War From Start!!!
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 07:27 PM by kpete
Run, Al, Run
The ideal candidate for the Democrats may be the man who won the popular vote in 2000 -- and who opposed the war in Iraq from the very start
TIM DICKINSON
Page 1 2 3

A stiff Vice President campaigns on his administration's legacy of unprecedented prosperity. Looks terrible on TV. Bows out, following a disputed vote count. Then, two terms later, with no incumbent in the race, he re-enters the fray. Promises to change the course of a disastrous war founded on lies. And charges to victory. I'm referring, of course, to the 1968 campaign of Richard Milhous Nixon. But four decades later, history has a chance to repeat itself for Albert Arnold Gore.

If the Democrats were going to sit down and construct the perfect candidate for 2008, they'd be hard-pressed to improve on Gore. Unlike Hillary Clinton, he has no controversial vote on Iraq to defend. Unlike Barack Obama and John Edwards, he has extensive experience in both the Senate and the White House. He has put aside his wooden, policy-wonk demeanor to emerge as the Bush administration's most eloquent critic. And thanks to An Inconvenient Truth, Gore is not only the most impassioned leader on the most urgent crisis facing the planet, he's also a Hollywood celebrity, the star of the third-highest-grossing documentary of all time.

"He's perceived very differently now than he was six years ago," says Frank Luntz, the Republican consultant who advised George W. Bush to dispute global warming during the 2000 and 2004 elections. "He's an icon. Imagine that: Al Gore, Mr. Straight and Narrow, Mr. Dull on Wheels -- now he's culturally cool."

Indeed, Gore is unique among the increasingly crowded field of Democratic contenders. He has the buzz to beat Obama, the substance to supplant Hillary, and enough stature to enter the race late in the game and still raise the millions needed to mount a successful campaign. "Very few people who run for president can just step in when they want, with a superstar, titanic presence," says James Carville, the dean of Democratic strategists. "But Gore clearly is one of those. He's going to run, and he's going to be formidable. If he didn't run, I'd be shocked."

31. That's what I wrote to him
when I signed the petition...and also said that we only have one Presidential term left to do something before it is too late environment-wise. If he doesn't run now, it may be too late.

Gore is intelligent...I am sure he knows this.

50. What a beautiful team that would be. Could you imagine the
future our children would have. Gore is brilliant and sensitive to technology, and the environment. What an explosion of jobs those two areas of concentration would create. Feingold is equally as brilliant, and fiscally very frugal.

79. Yet notice Carville's use of the word "titanic" in his assessment of a Gore
candidacy.

I don't believe a guy like Carville uses any terminology by mistake.

And we already know who Carville's candidate is for '08.

24. That's EXACTLY the same thing I imagined last night... that he takes the award, faces the cameras,
and then blows everyone's mind with the announcement that he's running for president of the United States.

I have to admit that I have a couple of tears in my eyes right now.

This is the person I trust more than anyone else to do the right thing.

Besides the experience and the dues he's clearly paid, the guy is a perfect nerd. He's the kind of guy that would stay up all night doing research because he just has to get the facts.

He's curious about everything that counts.

He understands too about the dangers of synthetic chemicals in the environment -- if anyone read Earth in the Balance, they would realize that.

I just love the guy!

Never thought I would say that about him back when he looked like a wooden stick during the debates. I was so pissed that he seemed to be so devoid of passion.

46. I don't know...
I'd be really pissed if the President of the United States won election simply because he possessed an Oscar. I mean, come on, there's something seriously wrong with somebody who votes for a candidate based on their screen performances. That's how Reagen and Swarzennegger got elected governor. I'd much rather someone got elected on his or her merits. And there's something seriously wrong with a candidate that can only get elected that way. I wouldn't suppose Gore would have that problem, since he has already won a Presidential election. Back then he was up against the worst Presidential candidate in American history, but this time he would be up against a Republican party that is seriously hurting. I don't trust Gore any farther than I can throw him, but I only need to know one thing from him: will he immediately end the war? If he will, he has my vote. And I think that if he makes it clear that he will do everything within his power to bring American troops home as quickly as possible he should have no problems at all getting elected.

74. He was a big supporter of strip mining.
While he was in Congress he pushed for, and got, permission to strip mine in national parks for some of his favorite corporations. As I'm sure you're aware, strip mining is harmful to the environment. I have book with an essay on Gore, and that's one of the things the author lists that we should be wary of. The book is called "You Are Being Lied To." It's about, well, how we're being lied to. The article about Gore is by the editor, Russ Kick. The strip mining story comes from a book by Cockburn and St. Clair of Counterpunch.

88. Believe me, he'll be there...
maybe doing another presentation with his Apple Keynote program on the projected screens!

By the way, isn't it ironic that the program he used for his global warming presententation was called "Keynote" and not "PowerPoint"? Maybe it's just me, but "PowerPoint" sounds republican - forceful, in your face, not necessarily accurate or true... "Keynote" sounds democratic and political - like an address of truth, honesty, and deeply pertaining to what's being presented.

Just a thought.

32. Let's take a long, hard look at the Repuke attacks in 2000.
#1 Attack: Al Gore is wooden and Robotic. Well, I think the article addressed that "attack" pretty well. Anybody who's seen him on SNL or cracking jokes on Letterman should know better.

#2 Attack: Al Gore claimed he invented the Internet: Well, he never said that. All he has to do is hold up his Webby Award for Lifetime Achievement presented to him by the Father of the Internet himself, Vint Cerf, for doing exactly what Al said he did in the speech that was misquoted.

Actually, that's pretty much it! Every attack on Al Gore by the Repukes has already been discredited, although the General Public may not be aware of it. Once they ARE made aware (bloggers, UNITE!) any Republican "Swiftboat" attack on Gore will be viewed as just that - unqualified "Swiftboating" with no merit.

They already pulled the "big guns" out against Al. Now, they are out of ammunition. Anything they shoot now will just bounce off.

Run, Al, Run!

Can you imagine how refreshing it would be to have an intelligent, articulate, honest president? I believe that if Gore won the election, just the fact of a majority of Americans voting for him would begin to ease some of the disdain the world holds for us.

67. A couple of questions about Al....
whom I really like, BTW.

But WHY did Al choose Lieberman for his running mate in 2000? Or did he?
I'm VERY concerned about who his running mate might be, just in case something happened to Al...

And, while I like him alot, I've always thought he was a bit hawkish on foreign policy.

Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 06:50 AM by RestoreGore
That way we will also know how many people on these forums who continually push him to run really care about the planet if he says he truly isn't by the amount of people who still respond to threads about his work and solving this crisis the way they do about the political speculation. Anyway, as I have stated many times to Mr. Gore, don't listen to anyone one way or the other on this, follow your heart. He is doing that now, so if this is truly what he wants in regards to continuing to be the environmental advocate, leader, businessman, author, teacher, and statesman who can make tremendous changes from behind the scenes free of the political and media Bs, he should continue to do so.

71. Just Imagine........ what a powerful phrase

This, agrees Luntz, is Gore's greatest draw. "Democratic voters in 2008 are not only looking to turn back the last eight years, but to erase the last eight years," he says. "If I were working for Gore, I'd message around a single word: Imagine. 'Imagine if I'd been president instead of George W. Bush. Imagine where we'd be today.' "

72. Probably the most powerful reason for Gore to run is that he ...
had no part in this war or this government since January 20th of 2001. He doesn't have to answer for any vote on any issue that's come up in the last 6 years. I would love to see a Gore/Clark ticket for just that reason. Secondly if the ticket were Gore/Clark we would not be losing a Senator, Congress person or Governor in order to gain a candidate. With the balance in the senate as close as it is that's an important point.

I would enthusiastically embrace Al Gore running. That is a shocking statement coming from me. I have never in my life been enthusiastic about any political candidate.

EVER.

I actually believe he is waiting as long as possible for an announcement. Waiting for the masses (us) to plead for him to run. We are effectively doing his campaigning for him right now free of charge.

I believe when he announces that it will be huge!

I am actually hopeful and optimistic! :)

81. It's critical that the Dem candidate opposed the invasion from the start
It's easy to run with the herd, and now that the herd is against the invasion Kerry and Edwards et al are acting all outraged at the Iraq mess. Well they could have prevented the mess, and the slaughter of tens of thousands of Iraq nationals, and I don't know how many Americans. I have no respect for "leaders" who lacked the courage to speak out when it really matters.

President Gore does have courage. I cant fault him on that.

A review of those 23 Senators who showed courage when it mattered:

82. I wholeheartedly agree!
Happy to make this my first post! (Lurker for, oh, about four years, but I feel the tide is turning now. I just heard Lou Dobbs say on "The View" that the reason Congress doesn't accomplish anything for working Americans is because they are "owned lock, stock and barrel by multinational corporations" and he was hedging on answering Rosie's "Should the president be impeached?" when it cut to commercial mid-sentence.)

I saw Al Gore's slideshow last year. I have been thinking since then that he should run, and will run. I think he's waiting til the last minute so all the other candidates will be nice and beaten up by the time he enters. He's on the board of Google. Man can finance himself, if he so chooses.

Al Gore and James Webb are the only possible future candidates that I am remotely excited about. I would be pleased with Obama or Edwards. Unhappy but supporting if it's Hillary. In a dream world, Kucinich is the president.

he could compete with Hillary in the media or financially. The big donors and media have been on Hillary's side for a while now. They have been repeating the inevitability narrative for more than a year.

I'd be with him but he has to crack the same media stonewall that did him in 2000

110. I'd give anything if the Democratic Party would just skip the primaries,
where we usually just give the Repukes negative ammunition for whoever emerges as the winner and all close ranks around Al Gore, He is indeed our strongest candidate and as close to ideal that I've seen. He deserves the nomination since his presidency was stolen. Also he is the one with the most foreign policy gravitas to go up against McCain.
