Pneumonia 'linked' to pollution
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7347065.stm

High levels of pollution may have contributed to the deaths of thousands of people in England from pneumonia in recent years, a study suggests.

A team at the University of Birmingham examined death rates from the disease and pollution levels in 352 local authorities between 1996 and 2004.

Writing in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, they reported a "strong correlation" between the two.

But the researchers conceded that social factors may also be at play.

Calculations were made by looking at how many deaths there were in each locality in excess of the national average.

These figures were then cross-checked with a range of pollutant levels, including engine exhaust emissions.

Culprit car

In total, 386,374 people died of pneumonia during the eight years examined, but there were significant regional variations. Lewisham in London had the highest number of deaths per head, Berwick-on-Tweed the least.

1. It was from all those non-smokers driving to bars in their non-polluting cars

Soon, very soon - I will be on the bandwagon of putting cameras in everyone's homes and black boxes in their cars. Because everything everyone else does can be tied into some fear mongering thing.

The elite have already won. They have got you and I fighting against each other while they go about doing as they please.

Somehow, we now see each other as the enemy and the cause. And all the while they have their companies which produce more toxins than we do, and we give them a pass because we are too distracted with how we are each screwing each other over....

2. They don't filter the hospital air in the patient rooms, either.
I was in the hospital once (actually several times) with bacterial pneumonia and I complained to the "patient advocate" that they should filter the air in the patients' rooms to the same level they filter the air in the operating rooms, because we don't know what kind of mold or yuck is growing in the individual air conditioning units.

I am sure she was just there taking complaints in order for the hospital management to fool the patients into thinking that their problems would be resolved. :wtf:

3. You are so right
Most of the time air systems are set up for saving money on heating. They keep the same air circulating and a minimum of fresh air coming in.
We have a nursing home that has few visitors because people get sick when visiting. After getting sick a few times after visiting friends and relatives - many just have to give up on the resident. It is really sad.

Also - what about stores that circulate air from where toxic lawn chemicals are stored into the rest of the store.
The local Costco pharmacy used to get its air supply from their tire department!
