FBI probe: Lieberman campaign to blame for crashing own Web site

A federal investigation has concluded that U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman's 2006 re-election campaign was to blame for the crash of its Web site the day before Connecticut's heated Aug. 8 Democratic primary.

The FBI office in New Haven found no evidence supporting the Lieberman campaign's allegations that supporters of primary challenger Ned Lamont of Greenwich were to blame for the Web site crash.

Lieberman, who was fighting for his political life against the anti-Iraq war candidate Lamont, implied that joe2006.com was hacked by Lamont supporters.

"The server that hosted the joe2006.com Web site failed because it was overutilized and misconfigured. There was no evidence of (an) attack," according to the e-mail...

1. Lieberman is so full of it.
The man has zero credibility. What a joke.

3. No, all the misleading was done by Lieberman
The campaign was to blame, whether it's sabotage or stupidity. The headline is not misleading.

At the time, of course, the Lieberman campaign had no use for such nuances. Their official statement was: "This type of dirty politics has been a staple of the Lamont campaign from the beginning, from the nonstop personal attacks to the intimidation tactics and offensive displays to these coordinated efforts to disable our Web site." They also made free with such epithets as "Rovian tactics".

We await the issuance of the apology, Joe.

Another interesting point: The Advocate story is based on an FBI email dated Oct. 25, 2006. Why is it a story this week? Because it wasn't publicly released when written. It was "recently sent to The Advocate in response to requests under the Freedom of Information Act filed in late 2006 with the offices of state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor. ... Blumenthal denied The Advocate's FOI request on the grounds it was a federal matter, and it took more than a year for the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice to respond."

I'd have to guess that Lieberman, as the person filing the complaint, had a copy of the FBI's response when it was issued, i.e., before the general election. He was happy, however, to go into the election without releasing that little tidbit of information.

He and McCain deserve each other.

5. I'll concede that it does say "to blame"
I am assuming it was stupidity. And if they did it themselves, that's just really dumb.
