Petraeus: "There are over a hundred (Iraqis) who have actually requested to stay on in detention"

http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2008/04/petraeus-crocke.html

Update at 11:23 a.m. ET: Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., asked Petraeus to discuss conditions in the military's detention facilities.

"There are over a hundred who have actually requested to stay on in detention after their actual time was up -- after their reintegration review board -- because they wanted to complete either job training or civilian education or some of the religious training that is offered in these facilities," Petraeus says.

3. Who believes this shit?
Of course they want to stay! They're safe in there! For gawd's sake there's a civil war raging in Iraq and these guys aren't stupid - they know they are in at least a safe zone right there, regardless of the fact that it's prison.

For some, most, all (?) - they'd probably be dead if they were let out at this point.

8. Exactly, I mean who the fuck are these guys who want to stay?
I'd bet most if not all of them are people who recognize they would be shot dead as soon as they leave. And the US knows it, and allows them to stay there while offering bullshit reasons like education or the chicken kiev (snort!)

These meaningless statistics just irritate the shit outta me.

9. Can I Godwin this thread real quick? You know what this reminds me of?
When the Gestapo rounded people up for being snarky to the Fuhrer, what they would do is "ask" them to sign paperwork asking the authorities to place them in "protective custody." To get a signature, they'd beat the hell out of the prisoner, head to toe, except the hands. They always left the hands alone, so they could get that signature.

10. Oh my gawd yes, you are right on.
I just can't believe that any of these congresspeople would buy this bullshit about classes and stuff. It's un-fucking-believable.
