My niece just told me .....
Her boyfriend in Iraq wonders why she's going to go see that movie called "Stop Loss" tonight ..... I e-mailed him (he's in Iraq, Baghdad, Medic) and told him ... probably because she wants to spend her life with you. Was I blunt enough?

8. You're right, I shouldn't have been so general. But I was a 'troop' myself many years ago
and I have the distinct impression they haven't gotten smarter over the years. What I meant to ponder was - why in the world would he even have a second thought about her going to see that flick? Arrgh.

If so, he's brainwashed. But I don't feel comfortable judging someone who needs to focus on survival.

I think your response was excellent. I hope, for his and your niece's sake, that he doesn't experience any ill-effects from this war.

11. Stop Loss received generally positive reviews from critics
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 06:04 PM by DesertRat
But it is uncomfortable to watch and isn't exactly a date movie. The anti-war message is important and I admire those, like Kimberly Peirce, who are making these movies. It's barely been out a week, too early to call it a flop.

13. Yea not a 'date move' ....
I sometimes want to tell my niece (18) to hey ... go out with other guys ... she's young ... don't get tied up with someone in the military .. in Iraq. Don't want her heart to be broken ... at such a young age ... but her boyfriend is really a good person when you get to know him. I'm just a jaded old shit ..... ;) ... and want a fairy tell ending for my niece. ;)

Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 06:44 PM by Thepricebreaker
Movies make the majority of their money within the first week..

Its opening weekend was what 4 million?

Thats a HORRID take in for a movie.

After the 1st week it slowly drops..

29. "Horton Hears a Who" has 3x the theatres and 9x the revenue
The # of kiddies going to it is amazing! I took 4 there today.

'Stop-Loss' is NOT a kiddie or a date movie.

It requires one to THINK.

PS - documentaries do not 'drop' in the way main stream movies do.

45. Just because a movie doesn't make money doesn't mean it is a "HORRID" movie.
It just means it's not suited to the mainstream.

32. People usually go to the movies for entertainment, not for
information. Too many people don't care, so the movies bomb, even the ones that are well made.

44. Because the Iraq war and the people affected by it is a story that needs to be told.
Maybe the timing is not right, but these are movies people will be able to look back on and get some understanding of what was going on.

19 years old .... wants to be a Doctor. Medic in the Army now ...... been in Iraq since Dec 24th 2007 .. he just got there in the theme of things ..... anyway ..... him and his girlfriend (my niece) have this thing going on on 'my space' like counting down the days .... when they can be together FOREVER ... and some shit .... ahhhhhh 489 days or something .... and they keep counting this down like it's a given. NAIVE? Who knows ..... I have other friends and relatives over there ... they are more realistic in some respects in dealing with the situation. I wish your son well .... and all his comrades. We need to end this ..... bring them home. Peace.

My son is home now and doing well, employed, new girlfriend, new place to live (a real house this time!) ;)

And he is finally separated from the National Guard as of last month... official.

He's never going back again.

It really saddened him as he joined to help people in disasters in the USA and he did help during
floods in the Midwest and during 9-11, he was a guard at O'Hara International in Chicago for 8 or
10 weeks after 9-11 but after he was stop lossed, that was it. He's out now and so are many good
people that America has lost now, that really needed to be there. He was in Iraq during Katrina... :(

36. well, i just watched the trailer
(haven't seen it before) and it's a movie that i would want to see (and i rarely go see movies)
http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/stoploss/sl_medium.html

here is a comment on imdb.com
"Previous narrative treatments of the Iraq conflict have been created by people of the Vietnam era and inevitably suffer when they tell their tale most effectively through characters of that generation. While there are many similarities there are significant differences. For my money Pierce nailed in many ways how our current military is addicting people into a path of self-destruction. The slow revelation of lives unraveling as a result of mechanisms developed to survive immoral circumstance was most telling for me, surpassing previous powerful if flawed films. Kudos to Pierce, a masterful work. If they stay away, the problem is in us, not the film. "

37. we watched it last week
and given that my hubby came THIS CLOSE to being stop lossed... the story was too close for comfort

It is a very well done movie and without giving away the plot... they touched upon all the issues that we have touched upon on this site

Now my personal theory as to why these movies are bombing....

WHAT WAR? Serious, when less than 2% of the population are doing the heavy lifting for supposedly a generational conflict, well people don't want to be bothered... my reaction was I have to come to a movie theater to see the war? There is a problem with this.

Oh and on this note, let relay a story from today's parking lot

Older couple has a bunch of bring them home, end the war stickers on car. (and a blue star in the back window)

Freeper starts to berate them over the bring them home for being cut-n-runners, wife is stunned, husband starts to answer, I got involved

I asked idiot, you know what that blue star means?

Should I? Libby thing right?

Wrong, that means a child of them is in the front lines you insensitive twitt. Then I pointed to my car (has DOD stickers) and I asked him, you know what that means?

Don't know, liberal thing?

DOD stickers... my husband is retired, so when are volunteering.

Hum and hah.

I went ahead and called him a damn coward chicken hawk. He walked away.

By the way the son of this couple, reservist, medic in Afghanistan and they hate this war.

But you think the freeper will go watch any of these movies? fat chance, he might have to face the horrors. And 98% of the population does not care... ok that might be a tad high... 95%... until they are personally touched, FORGET IT!

but would your niece really want her uncle speaking for her on how she wants to spend her life, and with whom?

I'm probably close to her age, and if a parent or relative said something like that to any S.O. of mine, I wouldn't be happy about it.
