Zimbabwe opposition claims election win on early results
Zimbabwe's opposition says it has claimed victory based on early results from an election where it is trying to unseat President Robert Mugabe after 28 years of power.

"It's a historic moment for all of us. We have won this election, we have won this election," Tendai Biti, secretary-general of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), told reporters, diplomats and observers at a briefing.

The opposition has accused Mr Mugabe of employing election-rigging tactics to stay in power despite Zimbabwe's economic woes and African observers say they detected fraud in Saturday's ballot.

Mr Biti said his party's election agents had reported that early results posted at polling stations showed MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai was projected to win 66 per cent of the vote in the capital Harare, an opposition stronghold.

1. Let the results come in. The governing party is much stronger outside the capital.
It will be close regardless.

2. Just the fact that it's close is amazing.
I hope the good people of Zimbabwe voted en masse, to overpower any god damn vote rigging that Mugabe and his thugs put in place.

4. Mugabe the thug
will probably find a way to stay on a little longer. His 28 year stranglehold on Zimbabwe is a disgrace.
