32. Years ago, I was rebuked for using the word (from Brer Rabbit)
just like you did. I had unintentionally stepped on toes, so to speak. If you do a very quick Google search or look at a slang dictionary, you'll see why I said "controversial."

I'll drop this now.

19. It was a character in a childs story when I was a kid
And it taught the lesson to mind one's own business. The point of the tar baby was that if you touched it you got stuck in the tar and no matter what you did you could not disenguage yourself. At least that is how it was read to me as a child, back in the 50's.

a group who can never find enough reasons to be oppressed or take yes for an answer.

34. Me too, though the lesson
I got out of it was about reacting in anger - the character attacks the tar baby for not doing what he wants, and gets stuck - and not thinking things through. Too bad it's now got racial overtones, because there's a valuable lesson there for the present Administration.

36. Disney even made it into a movie. Called Song Of The South with Uncle Remus.
Now Disney has that locked away in the vault never to be released again. Like they had named the Black Character Uncle Tom instead of Uncle Remus.

40. Actually, compared to Uncle Remus,
Uncle Tom was Nat Turner. I saw the movie when I was a kid, and then again in the late 60s ( that weird blend of cartoon and live action - we used to sing "Zip a dee doo dah, zip a dee ay / My oh my I am stoned today/ Ate too much sunshine, now I'm trippin away/ Zipa dee do dah, zipa dee ay - loved those bluebirds). Even from the beginning when it was made, there was quite a bit of controversy surrounding it.

It has been rated as one of the top 25 controversial movies at movies.com http://movies.go.com/feature?featureid=886352 and is right between "Birth of a Nation" #4 and "Last Tango in Paris" at #6, although whether it is controversial due to the content or the refusal to release it isn't clear.

55. It says Disney is mulling over a DVD release here in America and I hope they do.
Yes the movie shows a positive relationship between a slave and a slave owner. But Schindlers List shows a positive relationship between a Nazi and Jews in a death camp. Sometimes people can pull some good out of really bad situations. I think both movie show that.

Btw, I always thought it was zippity-do-dah. LOL

50. Yes
We were also read Little Black Sambo back then too. I think has been eliminated as well as Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. My we are so PC that all cultural references to how the times were must be eliminated. I think it's foolish and overkill. Life was, as it was, back then and to deny it or rewrite it takes away the lessons from the past. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. I think denying reality is bogus and makes life an illusion. The damn tar-baby was a decoy to get people who touched it stuck on it. Are we going to get rid of all the old movies where African Americans are portrayed in roles as butlers and maids? It may not have been right but that's how it was. Should we pretend that they were not brought here in derogation as slaves. Oh, sure we invited them to tea and asked them if they would mind pouring. We better hide the bottle of Mrs Butterworths while we are at it. It's a damn hard job to be good at this flaming white liberal stuff. But, oh, how we try. Ban Gone With the Wind, I say, Topsy, acts like a fool!!!!

41. Not really.
While I would not say it is a racist term, as such, it does have a complex history to it. Words are not static in their conotations, contexts, or the intentions of the speaker. They evolve, accrue meanings, shed others. You are right that it begins with Uncle Remus stories, in fact it is in "The Wonderful Tar-Baby." When I've taught Alice Walker's "The Color Purple" I've had my students read that tale because of its conclusion - "born and bed in a briar patch" - and because of the complex place that some oral tales have as they are appropriated. Walker re-appropriates that tale brillantly in The Color Purple when Mary Agnes goes to the white sheriff.

Whether is is Joel Chandler Harris approrpiating slave tales ( many of which were coded methods of resistance or songs on how to escape), that were appropriated by Disney, that were reused by Walker; or the Marx Brothers in their "Who dat Man" sequence from a Day at the Races; or Fanon's Black Skin, White Masks - it really isn't about "political correctness." For me, it is one of the reasons that we go back and look at this stuff over and over again. Just sayin.
