11. No
The athletes have worked too hard to get to the Olympics. They shouldn't suffer over the surrounding politics.

So I guess my answer is yes.

I'm glad a developing country is hosting the Olympics. I hope all bloodshed is prevented in China.

14. Developing?
How many more thousands of years do they need to "develop" in your opinion?

"Develop" into a neat-o country like us that respects human rights, like say ummmmm the right of everyone to get married?

The rights of people...say in countries like Iraq...to live without bombs dropping?

Maybe they should be concerned with healthcare for everyone....like us?

What, pray tell...and when...exactly do you expect them to develop into?

the first and only one that I've ever noticed on DU.

22. Developing or not
that's no excuse for massive human rights violations. China never deserved having the Olympics. The games are just a nice propaganda show for the Communist leadership to show off the "progress" the country has made economically (after all, everyone has to admit the skylines for their cities there are impressive) meanwhile stifling all dissent, locking up and executing untold number of prisoners, backing genocidal regimes in Sudan and Burma, and treating the people of Tibet like crap.

Fuck the Chinese government and their little song and dance show. I feel bad for the athletes though, having to go to their cities and gag on their awful air quality.

6. Absolutely!
Plus the commercialism and professionalism in the Olympics has ruined the event.

8. How do you boycott something you were never going to attend or watch in the first place?
I won't be watching them on TV, because I pretty much NEVER watch the Olympics. I don't have an airplane ticket to Bejing to cancel, nor am I an athlete who is in a position to make a statement by refusing to participate.

So, I really don't know what your question means.

....you can always stand in front of Starbucks with your face painted, like this guy... shouting 'BOYCOT THE BEJIING OLYMPICS -FREE TIBET......WHOAAAAAA' (that last part would give you away if you were Howard Dean)

Otherwise, our tv would be off or on a better program. I have little interest in it so far, anyway.

Turn off the TV, and write to the sponsors to tell them why.

Although the Tibet issue gives me a reason to feel good about not watching the Olympics this time around.

23. Have no interest in the Olympics this year
Even less than usual and yes the fact that it's in China is part of the reason. Even before the recent crackdown in Tibet, I had little interest. I just feel the whole event is billed as this global event, but it's just commercialized and is great for nationalism and chest thumping....

25. I lost interest when it was announced Beijing would host this olympiad; Tibet sent me over the edge.
I love the track and field events, but I simply cannot stomach them being in China as it is now. Fuck China and fuck the IOC for giving China a platform on which to attempt a bait-and-switch on its Human rights and environmental records.

28. I couldn't afford to go if I wanted to and the Olympics are so boring
I wouldn't watch it on television anyway. It wouldn't make any difference whether or not I boycotted, but if the U.S. President boycotted that would make a statement. Oh . . . wait . . . they hold Shrub's credit card. Never mind.

29. Watch The Coverage...Boycott The Advertisers
They're the ones paying for the crackdowns and repression...and this isn't the first time.

The pressure should be on the large corporations who use/need the Olympics as a big marketing tool to reach a worldwide audience. These people have the power to move both the IOC and the Beijing government to respect human and civil rights or pay a cost in the only language they understand...$$$.

Without corporate sponsorships, the games will collapse.

33. I'd like a list of the sponsers...
so I could figure out who to email to explain why I won't buy their products. I don't have the wherewithal to travel for that purpose, but if I did, I wouldn't. I do have a relative who loves the whole ragamarole and does have the resource to do it; he's cancelled his plans.

Anybody know where to get a list of the company's that will be supporting the broadcasts via their advertising?

Free Tibet.
