6. We just went through a small round of tornadoes

here in Memphis. It didn't get a great deal of national coverage, but it tore South Memphis up real good and killed a few people. Good wishes to the people of Atlanta from your little brother Memphis.

and some more bad weather last night and some on the way. The stuff coming now doesn't look too severe for ATL proper but will likely cause problems in my area to the north.

Any time there are building collapses they will search for people to make sure they have gotten everyone out. So far they are reporting no deaths but are still looking to be 100% sure.

The city took a pretty good hit...damage in the millions to be sure...but it could have been much worse. There were several thousand people in the Dome watching Bama and MSU play hoop...and the stadium was just missed apparently.

Atlanta: 130-mph assault
Experts confirmed today that a tornado with top winds of 130 mph ripped through downtown Atlanta Friday night, leaving a six-mile long path of destruction in its wake. The tornado, which was about 200 yards wide, had a path about six miles wide, skipping over downtown landmarks before heading into residential neighborhoods.

The National Weather Service said they had reports of a tornado on the ground crossing Georgia 400 in Forsyth County, three miles north of Cumming.

They said that the center of rotation was half-way between Flowery Branch and Gainesville at 2 p.m.

1:20 p.m. Saturday

The Polk County Sheriff has indicated that there are two confirmed fatalities in the Von Loop and Wax Road damage.

The National Weather Service said that they have received reports of damage to a number of mobile homes and the elementary school in Taylorsville in Bartow County.

They also said that three miles east of Euhralee, a trained spotter reported possible tornado damage with trees down along Euhralee Road.

GEMA officials are reporting a building collapse in Dalton. GEMA's Buzz Weiss said there are no reports of serious injuries in that collapse.

Officials in Polk County are reporting that bulldozers are being called in to help rescue workers get to homes and structures that are damaged there.

Fire and rescue officials in Polk County said that there was extensive damage at Von Loop and Wax roads, with unconfirmed reports of two fatalities.

An official in Bartow County said that there was debris in Cartersville south of the airport there.

31. Our local channel 2 has been covering the storms for hours now.

I live in Southern Hall Cty. just about 1 mile from northern Gwinnett, and I've had to take our doggies into the interior bathroom 3 times already! We've been fortunate that we seem to have escaped any damage, but Canton and Cumming ar getting hit hard NOW! They were reporting 3 3/4" HAIL in Cumming! Life isn't fun inGa. for the last 2 days!

So far, the only fatality I've heard of was in Polk Cty, but that's all they've said so far. If you pray, say one from those in the path of these storms. Yes, it's NOT ONE, it's several, and Canton was hit with a tornado about 2 hours ago, and are getting hit AGAIN!

43. T-storm system just moved through

We had more heavy rain and hail (marble-sized and smaller at my house). It lasted only a few minutes.

Most of the bad stuff has been north and west of the city. From Douglasville (about a half-hour west of Atlanta) to Cartersville (about 1.5 hrs. NW of Atlanta) there was a pretty strong band of storms. Earlier, Polk and Floyd Counties (Cedartown/Rome area, near the Ala. border) got hit hard, with a tornado and two fatalities. I'm very sorry for those folks. In fact, I have friends out there I need to call and make sure are OK.

About 4 p.m. today I was watching WSB-TV (local ABC affiliate), and they were showing the view from an airport cam (Hartsfield-Jackson airport is southwest of the city). You could clearly see a giant, classic anvil-shaped system slowly rotating, and heading straight for downtown. Scary as shit. Fortunately it doesn't seem to have wrought much more havoc here today.

Friday night I was at home several miles east of downtown, watching college roundball action on TV, when two major storm systems passed through the neighborhood in rapid succession. There was incredibly hard rain, hail pelting the windows, but oddly very little wind where I live. It was eerie how quickly these two storms moved through -- definitely the fastest-moving major thunderstorms I've ever seen in five decades of living in the deep south.

Later we heard about the dome roof getting peeled back. When the teevee cameras showed pieces of sheet metal wrapped around telephone poles, a lighted tower in Centennial Olympic Park toppled over, massive slabs of sheet glass literally sucked out of downtown buildings, and debris everywhere, we knew then that a tornado had hit the city.

Last night was quite dramatic downtown -- windows sucked out of the Omni Hotel, part of the Ga. Dome roof torn off, piles of bricks dumped on cars, motorists pelted with broken glass as their car windows blew out, the street outside CNN Center looking like a war zone, and tens of thousands of people in the dome, Philips Arena (home of the Hawks pro basketball team), World Congress Center, hotels, and condos. It's incredible nobody was killed in the city. As you may have heard, this is the first time in recorded history that a tornado has hit downtown Atlanta. As one relieved college hoops fan told a news reporter last night, "It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'March Madness'!"

Thanks, everyone, for your concern for us here in Atlanta. Despite the damage, apparently this went much, much better than it could have.
