That's a problem I'm having...
All the people that I want to run are reluctant to do so...

First Mark Warner, then Russ Feingold, now Clark and Gore. Won't SOMEBODY please give me a reason to get excited and hopeful about 2008?

1. It's because they're smart
They know their personal lives will be dragged all over the front pages, Fox reporters will be ferreting through their trash and video rental records, and the swiftboaters will simply be making stuff up. You've got to be bulletproof these days. Quite frankly, any 50-60 year old dude WITHOUT something to hide in his past is probably too boring to be president!

2. Who knows? The primaries are a long way off, and
maybe Brian Schweitzer will get the bug.

For those who don't know, he's the governor of Montana, one of the reddest states out there. He ran a populist, progressive campaign speaking in plain English to plain folks without talking down to them. He won a near landslide deep in the heart of GOP country.

If he doesn't run, I sincerely hope someone who is smart enough to look at his style and his record does.

3. I agree, Warpy.
Schweitzer is a great populist. I donno if he's ready for POTUS yet, but his style is amazing. There's something of that spirit in the Jr. senator from Montana also...

5. Or failing that he'd make a bang up VP choice

4. Dems have more good qualified candidates running this time than usual....
If no one else enters the race for the Dem nomination, we have plenty who could do the job and do it well.

Take heart, you are likely to see some of your choices hold high office in the next Dem Administration even if they do not run for President. There will be many places at the table for all of these fine individuals.

Feingold and Kerry will likely wield tremendous power in the next Senate, especially if the numbers break to give Dems enough seats to break the 60 vote filibuster. At that point, Repubs might as well show up with lawn chairs to 'watch' what the Senate is doing.
