We did it once before. We will do it again. Breath taking

Surrender of Cornwallis (at Yorktown) by John Trumbull
Our General Lincoln, on horseback, escorts the British officers
down a row flanked by General Washington and his staff on the
right and French General Rochambeau on the left. The American
revolutionaries defeated the best King George had to offer and
won their freedom. So our experiment began and it will again...

6. Very cool! Here's a couple of links to some history about him.
http://www.polishamericancenter.org/Pulaski.htm
He left Poland in 1772, after getting into a bit of trouble (involved in an attempted abduction of the king), and from other efforts in a rebellion against Russia. He wound up in France, and met up with one of my favorites, Ben Franklin. It sounds like he didn't have to do a lot of convincing to get him to volunteer to fight against the Brits, and Franklin wrote a letter of recommendation for him. He sounds like he was a pretty inspiring leader, and a damn good volunteer recruiter, partly from the pool of deserters of the British.
He wrote this in a letter to Washington:
"I came here, where freedom is being defended, to serve it, and to live or die for it."
Here's another link with much more information:

Interesting stuff!

Here is a photo of Pulaski Square.
http://www.hist.armstrong.edu/heritage/Feb07$02.JPG

When I was in 5th & 6th grade we had recess in this Square.Back then there was a fire lane down the middle so fire trucks would not have to fight traffic in tight turns around the square. It made a perfect football field for kids.
Growing up in such a historic area,I'm sure, helped shape who I am today. How could any one not love liberty when they live amongst the ghosts of patriots.

15. It is, as it has always been, up to us, but without leaders, around what or who
do we rally? The leaders are the nexus around which we gather, they are the one's that provide direction. Without leaders, we are just a mass of individuals, to picked off one by one by the oppressors, that are unified and have very definite goals.

19. You're right and I like your leader!!!
I heard him speak in person in Cleveland, late September. The guy has it. He needs more exposure, which is hard to get because he's in favor of the people.

Let's hope he gets a real shot.

Nice art today.

A modest to tell the truth moment Will the real MIchael Collins ...please stand up.

Michael Collins (Irish leader) (1890–1922), an Irish patriot and revolutionary of the 20th century
or
Michael Collins (Limerick politician) (born 1940), a modern-day Irish politician
or
Michael Collins (astronaut) (born 1930), an American astronaut
or
Michael Collins (footballer) (born 1986), an Irish footballer currently playing for Huddersfield Town
or
Michael P. Collins, a Canadian expert on reinforced concrete structures
or
Michael Collins (actor), an English actor
or
Mike Collins (born 1961), Welsh-born American comic book artist
or
Michael Collins (musician), a British clarinetist
or
Michael Collins (author) (1924–2005), pseudonym of author Dennis Lynds
or
Michael Collins (Irish author) (born 1964), an Irish-born author of novels and short stories
or
Michael Collins (computational linguist)

or

One of the many alter egos of the Marvel comics anti-hero Deathlok ...my personal favorite.

Perhaps a fine beverage...Michael Collins (Irish whiskey), created by Sidney Frank Importing Co., Inc.

How do you manage?

to you hard work,
peace.

Your first choice is correct....

Michael Collins (Irish leader) (1890–1922), an Irish patriot and revolutionary of the 20th century

There's also a Michael Collins who writes a lot for the Cincinnati Post and I'm sure he wishes I'd
chosen a different nom de plume. Didn't know who he was before the choice was made.

Collins was the practical revolutionary. He actually got rid of the British and endured the fury
of the Irish purists who thought that another 50 or so years of servitude was superior to a
negotiated settlement.

I'd appreciate it if you'd keep the Deathlok alter ego under your hat:evilgrin:

12. I take this kind of personally, because my family's history...
...tells me that Lord Cornwallis burned out the homesteads of three of my ancestors, who fought in the Revolutionary War.

I also take it kind of personally that George Bush, et al., with the erstwhile assistance of a rogue Supreme Court, undid (hopefully only temporarily) a lot of what my father and his Greatest Generation fought for in Europe in WWII.

We're not defeated. We're just brushing the dust off after a blow to our democratic republic the like of which we have never seen before.

Let's do another painting, after Trumbull, in which GW and his ragged band of mental incompetents is marched, in shackles, between rows flanked by our brave troops on the left, and Cindy Sheehan and her band of devoted American patriots on the right, on their way to The Hague. They won't have the honor to actually surrender.

That's so true. What a picture, though....

And this was one of the few naval battles that the French won decisively...Compte di Grassi and the French fleet kept the British from resupplying Cornwallis in the Battle of the Virginia Capes. Damn, without that, who knows...
