Says CIA May Need To Use Harsh Interrogation Techniques That Critics Call Black Mark On America

<snip>

"President George W. Bush said Saturday he vetoed legislation that would ban the CIA from using harsh interrogation methods such as waterboarding to break suspected terrorists because it would end practices that have prevented attacks.

"The bill Congress sent me would take away one of the most valuable tools in the war on terror," Mr. Bush said in his weekly radio address taped for broadcast Saturday. "So today I vetoed it."

The bill he rejected provides guidelines for intelligence activities for the year and has the interrogation requirement as one provision. It cleared the House of Representatives in December and the Senate last month.

"This is no time for Congress to abandon practices that have a proven track record of keeping America safe," the president lied.

We must demand that congress override this veto.

One of the most valuable tools in the war on terror? No sir -- torture. It is torture.

"President Bush's veto will be one of the most shameful acts of his presidency. ... It will go down in history as a flagrant insult to the rule of law and a serious stain on the good name of America in the eyes of the world." Senator Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.

We need to endure until we win. Tell them: Override the veto! No torture in our names. None.

I ask that we not turn our back on this travesty of morality and justice, this violation of all decency by the corrupt republicon Imperial Administration of Commander AWOL Bush.

We must mobilize and demand the Congress repudiate this heinous Veto, or we are all complicit by our silence.

20. I hope so too
Glad to help, SpiralHawk.

Imagine someday any of us being called a "good American" who went along with the torture policy of the US.

If anyone has never called a congressperson's office:
Tell them your name and that you're a constituent and that you vote.
Ask what the rep's/senator's position is on overturning the veto and how they intend to get involved in doing that.
Tell them in your own words why torture as a US policy is so completely unacceptable to you and why this is where you are drawing the line.
Thank them for listening.

Three phone calls. Add Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and that's 5 phone calls. Maybe twenty minutes out of our lives.

No torture!

sorta of. I didn't see this yesterday. Once again Bush has shown how immoral he is. Congress must over ride his veto. If they can muster the courage to do it once, maybe they can get some other things over turned. Torture doesn't work.

25. Email from Ted Kennedy about the veto
Dear ,

On Saturday, President Bush vetoed legislation that would have banned the U.S. government from using waterboarding and other "enhanced interrogation techniques."

This veto is one of the most shameful acts of his presidency.

Unless Congress overrides the veto, this will go down in history as a flagrant insult to the rule of law and a serious stain on the good name of America in the eyes of the world.

There's never been a more important time to take a stand again torture.

You've already signed my petition - now ask your friends, family members and colleagues to sign it too:

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Senator Edward M. Kennedy
