Jesus tomb found--this is real. And fascinating...
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 08:45 PM by bif
Feb. 25, 2007 — New scientific evidence, including DNA analysis conducted at one of the world's foremost molecular genetics laboratories, as well as studies by leading scholars, suggests a 2,000-year-old Jerusalem tomb could have once held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth and his family.
The findings also suggest that Jesus and Mary Magdalene might have produced a son named Judah.

The DNA findings, alongside statistical conclusions made about the artifacts — originally excavated in 1980 — open a potentially significant chapter in Biblical archaeological history.

A documentary presenting the evidence, "The Lost Tomb of Jesus," will premiere on the Discovery Channel on March 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The documentary comes from executive producer James Cameron and director Simcha Jacobovici

14. He's way too real.
Everyone, remember, this is from JAMES CAMERON, "Mr. Titanic." Now you can hate that movie or like it, but that movie, plus the way he pushed, marketed and boasted about that movie, makes me wonder about this new Jesus thing.

So James Cameron -- Mr. Middlebrow mainstream box office gold -- is now touting a new media product, that just happens to tie into that summit of best-seller mass-market nonsense (The Da Vinci Code). I'm just saying...

3. Unless there's some unknown decendant, I'm not sure how much good that DNA
will do. Wasn't there a book and then a movie about this? :)

4. If they could prove this to be the real deal
a lot of concepts about Jesus and Christianity will change, I predict.

Of course, Yeshua and Miriam were very common names at the time, so I'm not sure how they will be able to say for sure who these people really were.

5. Oh dear, Jesus
was consorting with a won ton woman (see earlier threads about a Fox newscast) and omigawd, he not only consorted, but he lusted in not only mind, but body and fathered a child out of wedlock????? Oh dear, I can hear fundies hitting the floor all over this country.

Personally, I don't care what Jesus did. He did what he did and if he had a kid, married or not, more power to him. My religion tells me he died for my sins and that's all I need to know. After all he was sent her to be one of us and mingle.... and it appears he may have mingled quite well!

All kidding aside, how would they tell if it was Jesus or not - I am no DNA expert, but don't you have to have a parent or sibling's dna to establish paternity? Oh, I get it....God is in the Bahamas with Howard Stern and Larry Birkhead. Got it. Sorry, had a slow moment there folks......

6. Try reading that article carefully.
For example, the DNA evidence concludes that the "mary magdelene" dna and the "jesus" dna are not from closely related people. Oh. So what exactly does that prove with respect to who exactly was buried in these boxes?

I'm sorry, but this is just sensationalist bullshit as far as I can tell. The Discovery Channel is selling product here.

8. BS. How could you test DNA of someone who has no known relatives
And remember, Jesus' family was POOR, and ossuaries were for the rich.

This is just more pseudo-science crap for the faithful to gobble up as verification their myth is true.

Plus, hasn't this ossuary thing already been debunked as a fake? (The guy who made them was known to interpol as a fake antiquities dealer and manufacturer, and shown on 60 minutes or some similar.)

Perfect finds like this usually aren't.

11. I think that refers
to a different ossuary, the one supposedly holding "James, brother of Jesus".

13. There isn't enough evidence of Jesus to know if his family was poor. Actually some claim the
family was well off. The striking part of this story to me is how the arguments against this find highlight the arguments against the whole story of Jesus too.

16. Actually, Christians believe that Jesus rose bodilyy into Heaven
Finding earthly remains directly contradicts this.

15. If true--it'll drive the bible thumpers nuts.
But the point that his family was dirt poor, so how could they have afforded a tomb is a good one.
