so...300 restaurants in Ft Worth closed...due to a squirrel
Source: Houston Chronicle

FORT WORTH, Texas — A squirrel is blamed for an electrical outage in Fort Worth that affected thousands of customers and prompted a boil-water advisory for parts of the city.

Oncor spokeswoman Carol Peters says the rodent Friday got into a substation and made a connection between two high-voltage points, causing an arc.

Peters told The Associated Press that the transformer sensed the surge, caused by the now-deceased squirrel, and shut down.

Service was interrupted to about 10,000 customers and two Fort Worth water department pumping stations. Electricity was restored within one hour.

Residents of southwest Fort Worth, mainly south of Interstate 20, were advised to boil their water before drinking it, or using it to cook or make ice, until likely early Saturday

...a few years ago the same thing happened on the West Coast. Six states lost power all because a squirrel got burned on one of the transformers at a crucial time.

I remember it well - central valley of California in the middle of a summer heat wave.
