I have a Masters/PhD//am a engineer/doctor/scientist and post on DU
A public service announcement to everyone on DU and on the entire Internet who posts about their credentials in this that or the other to make a point or keep from embarrassing themselves....

Nobody believes you.

And you're lying.

That is all.

numbered? I've seen it a few times. Does it "mean" anything?

Thanks!

139. sure do!
This OP will make it to GD page 21, then stay there as other OP's go into the achieves. I usually allow it to sit on page 21 for a couple days before I kick it.
The only way I found it was by looking at page 20. I generally hang out on page 20 and :kick: kick OP's that I feel would benefit DU'ers. I only kick threads that I find valuable.
I've been kicking this one cause it is just so odd that it will never 'die' on its own.

15. What angers me is when people refuse to take the word about anything from someone with credentials
As if ignorance is some kind of informed position on its own.

If I was communicating about cooking with a cook, I'd listen to his/her input, because I can't cook. But when I'm
discussing a topic I know something about, I'm stunned at the number of people who try to hold opinions in areas
they've never studied. There are plenty of arrogant know-it-alls (I've run across them, too), but there are just as
many arrogant "I have a right to an opinion" people who often have no knowledge on which to base their opinion in the
first place ... they just emotionally want to believe something and they do.

It's the old tradition of anti-intellectualism in the USA.

24. A degree doesn't make you an expert in your subject.
Ask Bush.

BUT, in general, somebody who has credentials probably has some insights that somebody without them might not have.

Try having a degree in finance and having to explain over and over and over again how the central banking system or the mortgage backed securities work. And being yelled at for supporting corporate greed or something. Knowing how it works doesn't make me a billionaire. If it did, there wouldn't be finance professors. :-)

There's a reason I don't own a TV - I would go crazy(er) if I had to watch all the framing of issues and avoidance of hard questions that seem to be the bulk of the media coverage of our elections.

I got lucky and had a kick-ass calculus teacher in high school. College was a mixed bag, but what I had learned earlier helped me push through. Just remember that calculus is just geometry. If you can visualize what you're trying to solve it sometimes can make it easier to get to the solution.

30. Typically I have only seen this/done this myself
When forced to by an opponent who knows literally *nothing* about a subject and demands that I provide proof of why my "opinion" is more valid than his/hers.

I put the word "opinion" in quotes above because the typical assertion in that sort of discussion goes like this: "My OPINION is just as valid as yours", disregarding the fact that many things in the universe are fact rather than opinion, and therefore only one side of some discussions are actually correct, regardless of how strongly someone feels about their particular viewpoint.

And yes, people with advanced degrees in a particular field DO often know more about that field than your average internet poster with a layperson's knowledge.

And frankly, I suspect anyone who claims otherwise is buying into the anti-intellectualism that is currently rampant in our society (and sadly, on DU also).

P.S. I'm not lying. If other people choose to disbelieve what I say about myself because believing would force them to reconsider their "opinions", well, that's something I can't do anything about. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

55. Yep.
I agree that generally one's 'credentials' are not relevant on msg-boards.

However, when something technical is being discussed, or rather, when something technical is being wildly misrepresented, then I do believe that there comes a time when those involved should be willing to lay out, for all to see, what background one has in the issue under discussion.

As in, how to spot an internet liar, chock with descriptions of the usual M.O.s and some street-corner psychology about why they do it. But there's a darker side to it as you can imagine, when people get hooked up with them in real life.

45. Blowhard -->>
Blowhard feels the need to present his credentials before entering the fray - even if they are irrelevant to the discussion. For example, in a movie forum conflict he might attempt to settle the matter by saying, "As a Ph. D. candidate in particle physics I believe I can say with some authority that the 'Beavis and Butthead' movie represents the emergence of a new cultural paradigm." Huh?

I think I've brought it up twice. But I worked and studied hard for many years to acquire what specialized knowledge I do hold. I don't pre-emptively know everything there is to know, but I do demand to be taken seriously when I expound on certain subjects, and I serve notice that I'm not talking out of my hat.

Otherwise, I am Harrison Ford's secret lover, personally advise Donald Trump about business, helped Angelina Jolie become beautiful by following my example, served as the ass-kicking stunt and body-double for Ripley in Aliens and Sarah Connor in Terminator, ghost-wrote most of Stephen King's bestsellers, marched with Martin Luther King, tried to talk Kennedy out of the Bay of Pigs, refused three Nobel Prizes, saved the paisley coyote from extinction, caused Mensa to disband when I set a new benchmark of intelligence, and was a billionaire by the time I was eight.

Now THOSE are the posters you should view with a jaundiced eye. And we have them, don't we?

Someone posted about it on DU, that's how I learned about this site. When the sociopathts in power come to mind- this also comes to mind.

don't miss this page:

http://ponerology.com/psychopaths_1.html

>Like a color blind man incapable of distinguishing red from green, a small minority of the human population cannot experience or fully comprehend the normal range of human emotions. And like those color blind who may conceal their condition by using the correct words while not understanding their meaning (e.g., the top traffic light is “red”, the bottom is “green”) - so does this minority conceal their condition by playacting an emotion's exterior signs (facial expressions, exclamations, body language). However, they do no actually experience the emotion in question. Their deception is revealed in the laboratory, where they respond to words like DEATH, CANCER, DISEASE, as if they were DAY, CREAM, or PAPER. They lack the ability to comprehend the emotional “punch” that certain words contain. They use others’ emotional reactions as cues, and they adjust their behavior to portray the correct ‘emotional’ behavior<

But calling posters "liars" who say so is disingenous.

There's probably a reasonable distribution of all of those you have listed, and I often see people cite their credentials when repeatedly attacked or challenged by those who demand such statements of expertise.

Bottom line: those who demand such statements of expertise, or consider all who cite them liars, are equally annoying.

121. works for me
I tend to ignore any poster who either asks for or gives a curriculum vitae.

As for legal issues, I can tell who is a lawyer and who isn't once they start discussing legal issues of any kind. Based upon my reading of threads here, there is no upside to admitting if one is a lawyer, and it makes no sense for lawyers to argue with non lawyers over cases whose holdings non lawyers cannot possibly understand. Concepts like "standing" or "clean hands" either mean something or they don't, and a quick read online won't give a non lawyer the depth of understanding that 84 hours of law school, a bar exam, and years of practice produce.

Who uses a Thesaurus to find legal terms? No lawyer, that's for sure, with the possible exception of those graduating from the law school which gave Fox News' contributor Wendy Murphy her J.D.

Lex

I think that is one of the most fascinating topics out there. In the 70s I was in a public library and found one of the Edward DeBono books -- next thing I knew, the libary was closing. I thought a few minutes had passed.

So in the early 80s I met DeBono in New York City at a big do, and ended up taking courses for several weeks.

Back then it was mandatory for kids in several countries to learn lateral thinking in the first and second grade.

Imagine! Teaching children how to think outside the box from the get-go!

119. “brute assault on the entire intellectual world”
Might as well put this thead to good use:

http://www.waronscience.com/excerpt.php
>>
Read today, some of the most prophetic passages of The Party That Lost Its Head are those that denounce Goldwater’s conservative backers for their rampant and even paranoid distrust of the nation’s intellectuals. The book labels the Goldwater campaign a “brute assault on the entire intellectual world” and blames this development on a woefully wrongheaded political tactic: “In recent years the Republicans as a party have been alienating intellectuals deliberately, as a matter of taste and strategy.“

Certainly, the proliferation of think tanks has not had as a corollary that conservatives now take scientific expertise more seriously. On the contrary, the Right has a strong track record of deliberately attempting to undermine scientific work that might threaten the economic interests of private industry. Perhaps more alarmingly still, similar tactics have also been brought to bear by the Right in the service of a religiously conservative cultural and moral agenda.<<

1. "five college degrees, one not even American!"

2. Folks with academic "credentials" that would qualify them for the Nobel Short List.

3. Posters who can speak "five foreign languages" (or more) "fluently," and whose response to "ask me my name in (fill in the language spoken fluently here)" is "I'm putting you on ignore."

4. Other poseurs who think that because they roughly know what a "curriculum vitae" is, it's the same thing as if they had an actual college degree....

143. I know a lot of idiot professors, but they are not the BIGGEST idiots I know.
Some of them should definitely know better, though.

If I was lying, I'd make up BETTER credentials!

153. What a useless fucking post.
Some people have the credentials and claim them. Some claim them and don't. Some have them and don't claim them. Any reasonably well-rounded person can tell the difference, and we don't need some jackhole telling us that all of them are fake. And that is all.
