Ill Iraqi President Flown to Jordan for Treatment

An exhausted Iraqi President Jalal Talabani fell ill on Sunday at the end of another day of mayhem in strife-torn Baghdad that saw at least 40 people die in a suicide attack.

The 74-year-old president flew to Jordan from the northern Iraqi city of Sulaimaniyah for medical tests after he was overcome by the unrelenting pressure of recent work, his office said.

Jordanian Health Minister Saad al-Kharabsheh told AFP that his country "will provide President Talabani with all the care he needs, at the highest level."

A senior member of Talabani's party, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, told AFP the Iraqi president suffered from kidney problems and had been hospitalised for several hours in Sulaimaniyah before flying out.
