For a moment- forget the war ,primaries, mass shootings -and say happy 99th birthday to a hero:
Miep Gies, protector of Anne Frank, her family and 4 others, is 99 years old today:

"I could help these people. They were powerless, they didn't know where to turn. I always emphasize that we were not heroes. We did our duty as human beings: helping people in need. Lots of people didn't help, some because they were afraid."

She has been awarded the title 'Righteous Among the Nations' by the Israeli Supreme Court, and lives quietly in the Netherlands.

3. Happy birthday to an incredible woman.
I find it amazing that people like her who exhibit true heroism always downplay their actions. She truly IS a hero because she managed to overcome the paralyzing fear that resulted in the inaction of most people to take a stand against the horrific evil taking place all around them. The world need more brave souls like her.

12. Something you should not miss if you go there, definitely
I saw quite a few people well up in years peddling around on their onespeed black beater bikes, and imagine that she might be one of them. Happy Birthday, indeed!

7. A very brave person. I still remember reading about how she
struggled to find food and smuggle it back somehow to the families. How worried she was about noise during the day.

Has she ever written a memoir?
