If the Bornagain Xtians believe in the Rapture.....
...Then why do they care WHO gets elected?

Seems to ME that if they're headed for the Wild Blue Yonder any second, they should be a little more concerned about personally missing the bus, and less worried if there's Universal Health Care, Abortion, or the War. Wouldn't you think?

I mean REALLY. If they are going to LITERALLY be popped out of their clothes and go shooting up like a squeezed watermelon seed, then why should they give two shits WHO the president is?

This just hit me a minute or two ago. Sort of like the Rapture.

10. Well, actually, the very existence of the Constitution interferes with
their ability to follow the letter of the Bible.

Thank God.

I know it would be a distinct deterrent to me.

26. No one's "Bashing" Christianity
...I personally think Jesus was a wonderful human being with all sorts of progressive ideas, like helping the poor and treating people as equals, and not judging those who're different than we are.

It's the Fundie followers of Jesus that I'll bash every opportunity I'm given. Because they are the enemy of enlightenment, and America has given them power and validation. They will keep as many people ignorant to science and reality as they can, and I consider that a dierct threat to the way I live.

The Fundies are heretics to me.

Matthew 6:5

- And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love
to stand and pray at the street corners, so that they
may be seen by others.

Even Matthew had them down, pat.

Believe it or not, I'm completely serious here. I'm not trying to be funny.

If I believed that at any second God was going to take me off to Heaven, I'd be thinking about THAT and not worried what the Heathens down the street were doing.

Seriously.

So...why to they bother with politics at all? Seems all rather silly and pointless viewed through those lenses.

19. Good point,Tyler.
The born agains do believe in the Rapture where everything worldly is
left behind.

The only thing I can think of is-

They aren't really sure when that Rapture is going to occur.

They want to cover themselves until it does.

That's the only thing I can think of right now.

Same with Fundy Islam (not all Islam -- just the extremists).

17. Here's some logic: "born-again" is a very wide category
Not all "born-again" Christians believe in the Rapture, for one thing. There goes the OP. For another, even those who do believe in the Rapture are not necessarily nihilists like their extremist kin.

Going after the extremists is fine, but categorising all "born-agains" or even Rapture-believers as evil fundies bent on world domination is ignorant and quite in spite of that logic thing you seem to have a shine for.

24. "IF" goes the OP.
'scuse my ignorance, please.

ALL of the Born Agains around work (there are quite a few) have talked about "The Rapture" on some occasion or another.

However: we do not have to use Groupspeak, hence the modifier "IF."

37. It's nothing new.
Christian bashing is the primary source of exercise for a certain contingent on DU. The best you can do is ignore these threads because those most deeply involved are apparently not sufficiently thoughtful to engage in anything approaching a respectful discussion on the topic of religion and responding to them only serves as an encouragement.

23. it seems to me that making the our world the healthiest it can be
Many Christians, although believing in the Rapture in one form or another (from simple death to your dramatic Watermelon Seed scenario), do not pretend to know when it will happen (repeat: 'many', not 'all'), much like we all know we will die, but simply do not have knowledge of the date. Thus, we try to live our lives righteously as though it really is the last day-- and doing as many good works as possible both directly and indirectly in the meanwhile.

If that is indeed the case, and we are called to make every day count, it seems to me that making the our world the healthiest it can be (e.g., environmental stewardship, social programs, etc.) is not only the most effective way to do that, but something we are called upon to do. And as I see it, voting for candidate A or candidate B is one tool among the many we have to accomplish that.

Just my opinion...

You can't expect logic and rationality from people who have been brainwashed.

You'll end up so frustrated you'll be pounding your head against a wall and they'll still be praying that you'll find God while they do everything they can to kill you.

35. That is my thought too...
If the babble stories are real, the rapture is imminate, why do they even bother with messing up their 'gawds plan'?

Their actions only shows that they do have some doubts, even the hardcore babble thumpers. Because if the rapture was literal and the other fables in the babbles were real, then all they should be doing is staying home and going to kult meetings to prepare for their magical flight into the sky.

I've also wondered why, if their God is so powerful and is going to punish the evil sinners in the end anyway, do they feel the need to screw so much with us while we're here. Do they think God will reward them for being such utter dirtbags to us or something?
