Is it possible to hide a forum from the Greatest page?
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 10:16 PM by hootinholler
Edit to say it seems possible, but I can't seem to get it working, per link below.

It would be nice to have a view that is non-primary once in a while. Things are getting lost.

1. Indeed.
Ever see anything from the 9/11 dungeon there?

2. Are you saying that you want to hide the GD-Primary threads?
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 10:06 PM by I Have A Dream
If so, this thread explains how:

(On edit: I don't know if it would hide them from the Greatest Page though.)

4. Yes, I just got finished editing my post saying that it might not work for...
the Greatest Page. I think that someone needs to send a request to the Admins to have that be either a default action of selecting not to see the threads or at least to give an option to further select this in addition to what's currently available.

And the destructions are pinned to the top of the forum.

:hi: Thanks!

5. As a former mod, I don't think so.
Those that are included on The Greatest Page depends on the number of the recommendations that they get. That's all, and they're there, that's all. Unless it's a dupe, or something, and then the admins have judgement... :-)

But threads on The Greatest Page get more attention, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't want it there...

7. It's not that I don't want them there...
It's that I want a temporary view of what *else* is there. Seems to be settable via preferences.

8. I understand. But it's still up to members and their recs what appears there.
We sometimes remove dupes, but they got enough recs to put them there.

But I totally get where you're you're coming from. I tend to look over the entire
Greatest Page and recommend those which I also recommend, which I mostly agree with, think it's kind of my duty to do so, but I also look at The Latest, and and also forums that I think may have good threads...

You just need to find your way on DU and decides what interests you and what you feel needs the most attention. You've got a lot of support here, every issue and preference does, and I'm not always happy with the opinions expressed, as well, but I am grateful to have found a forum which accepts so many divergent opinions, whether I agree with them, or not... :hi:

10. I have no problem with GD-P threads being recommended to the "Greatest" page
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 11:14 PM by 8_year_nightmare
as long as those of us who don't want to see them at all have the capability of "hiding" them. That way, everyone wins. Nothing is taken away from those who live for Obama/Hillary threads, & the others are able to enjoy a clutter-free "Greatest" page.

11. I've never hidden a thread, so I actually don't know.
This is one of those times when I miss the "ask the admins" forum...

9. What is the purpose of the "Greatest" page?
Or, why call it "Greatest" page? One's got to give...either re-name the "greatest" page to "The Most Mundane, Anal Obama/Hillary Threads With the Most Recommendations" or return it to its intended purpose: to provide a page for the most compelling threads.

If it's possible for each of us to choose to "hide" this topic from the "Latest" page, why can't this same action "hide" those on the "Greatest" page as well? I thought when this capability was announced, all GD-P threads would be hidden.

12. I think that the purpose of The Greatest Page is to highlight threads which are of interest to the
most members. I tend to look at it a lot, since I would have missed some pretty interesting stuff, otherwise... :-)

But I do understand where you're coming from. We do tend to get stuck on certain issues here and it can get pretty irritating. I lived through the last primary season, where Dean and Clark got similar attention, and don't get me started on the "pope wars" of a couple of years ago... As with those, this, too, will pass.;)

13. But do you realize that all it takes for these candidate threads to get to the "greatest" page
is a group of rabid followers who enjoy seeing their candidate's name dominating the page? The thoughtlessness & lock-step mentality undermines the purpose of the "greatest" page, don't you think?

And, why, for heaven's sake, do we allow these mindless, competitive "your candidate stinks" threads to have a forum of its own? (Actually, two forums: GD-P and the "greatest" page -- if you don't catch it on its provisioned forum, it's sure to be on the "greatest" page, which gets more attention.) Do we really want to air our dirty laundry for anti-Democrats -- making it a lot easier for them to garner all the hatred for our own candidates in one spot? It's like we've drawn a map for them to find what they're looking for.
