Kiwis pick on Shrub

Complaint against Bush billboard upheld
By Sarah McDonald

A complaint made against a Hell Pizza billboard featuring US President George Bush has been partially upheld by the Advertising Standards Complaints Board (ASCB).

The advertisement featured Mr Bush and the words "Hell. Too good for some evil bastards".

Objections were made to the use of slang in a public place, the alleged denigration of Mr Bush, and perceived blasphemy.

One of the complainants described the billboard as a vicious smear campaign against an openly Christian person.

But advertising agency Cinderella Ltd defended the billboard, saying that it tapped in to a growing sense of outrage about the invasion of Iraq.

The agency also said that use of the term "bastard" is widespread and can be considered a compliment.

Nice to see SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE using a bit of sarcasm and wit. Never happen in the US, the fundies would be up in arms, and another one of our freedoms would be gone.

I guess smear campaigns would be OK if the recipient wasn't pretending to be a Christian.

4. Bush is a Christian
He just happens to be a bad one. Some people who have the same religion or philosophy or whatever as I do are evil bastards, and I don't take it personally.

I just don't understand the denial here. Is it because he's hurt so many innocents?

8. Is that a contraction of 'hypocritical Christian?'
Sounds about right. Me, I prefer the contraction "chucklefucker," but I suppose it's a matter of taste.

10. Damn, this has been going on for a while
The original Hell Pizza billboard came out in 2005. I remember this because Mr. Laurel and I made it a point to support them by eating there when in New Zealand on our honeymoon in 2005.

11. It could have been worse for Bush
They could have used a photo of Bush as he appears in the present day, looking like a Gollum-Chimp, not one taken about 10 years ago when the Dorian Gray effect was still working.
