Well, it was fun "knowing" some of the folks here while it lasted.
Don't let the door hit me on the way out and all that, yeah yeah I know. I have felt the same way reading other people's posts saying they are leaving the board and what not, so those reactions are "priced in", but knock yourselves out anyway if so inclined. Somehow I still felt compelled to make a post like this, so there is that.

I appreciated the posters like kpete who take so much time to post good articles and info, and the ones like mythsaje who take care to put really well written pieces here. There are many good folks like this here.

I was already starting to spend a lot less time here, but the primary thing has just about killed any desire to even lurk much. It bothers me because it seems like so much ugliness without even a useful purpose. Much worse in my view than if candidate's partisans just stayed in their own playpens and read the forums of the other candidates for info but didn't post there. It just seems like a lot of angry shouting with difficulty gleaning any useful information amid the dreck.

It leaves enough residual bad feeling, for me, that there isn't much motivation to come back after the nomination regardless whether my candidate makes it or one of the others.

Maybe I'll still check the news and editorial forums for some links. Take care everyone.

1. I can relate... but then I look at post counts and time here.....
Don't let them ($$$ ppl) do that to you.

There is value here and you KNOW IT.

... but I can't argue with your reasons for doing so.

Best of everything, my friend. You will be missed.

3. I made a half joking suggestion
that there should be pay per view forums for charity

Obama v Clinton
Clinton v Edwards
Edwards v Obama
where interested parties could pay to beat up the other side
at least it might raise a little money for a good charity

5. Human Nature is flawed in and of itself...
I'm not surprised the posts reflect this fact.

Negative sells. It always has and always will.

I'm also looking forward to all this stuff to end. In the mean time, I'm spending more time in the lobby on subjects that interest me more.

6. your sentiments are not alone, and I have no doubt it extrapolates far beyond DU also
Unless a useful dialog on the REAL issues emerges soon, instead of the constant needling, and personal attacks on each other's candidates, I wouldn't be so optomistic about a 2008 Presidential victory for the Democrats

7. Take care of yourself and be well. I've come so close to quitting in recent months...
...but the Admins making a separate GD:P forum has been a sanity-saver for me. That and being able to Hide the forum.

I hope the circular firing squad runs out of bullets soon.

8. The separate and hidable GDP forum...
Has been this forum's saving grace. Not having to endure trolling and the aroma of virgin astroturf has done wonders for my appreciation of this place.

Now, if we could just get a Zombywoof hug thread, all would be right with the world. ;-)

14. That sentiment seems a tad pale from someone quoting Hunter Thompson in their sig line
Just sayin' ... cause let's say there had been a forum of political journalists and hacks back in the early 70s, all weighing in on various topics/issues ... HST would've def been relegated by elites and ass kissers to the lower tier, if not abandoned entirely.

Sounds like you have a desire for a more tightly moderated board.

I tend to like things wild and wooly. I say let an idiot shout out their idiocy loud and clear, and swiftly be spanked in the marketplace of ideas.

Perhaps you'll come to miss the peculiar character of this place after awhile and we'll meet again?

Peace

16. Why can't anyone just quietly slink away?
I know why: making a show of "leaving" DU - and "making a show" here includes posting about leaving, even in a low key way - is just a way of getting attention, a last ditch grovelling play for validation. It's saying, "I give up because I can't convince everyone to like me and/or think like me...but before I go: one last kiss..."

I can always tell the ones who are legitimately dismayed by the DU atmosphere by their unremarked, undocumented absence. They just go away.

Something I also noticed: the supposed spurned DU lover will always use his/her "last post" to get in parting shots. This is akin to a crack addict resolving to kick the habit, then binging all the way to the rehab clinic.

I, too, have often wondered what it would be like to stage my own funeral. Wouldn't it be fun to know what your friends and relatives REALLY thought about you?

19. attention whores ?
lol ... maybe not tho...

maybe they just want someone to say... aw please dont leave!... or maybe they just want to start just one more arguement before they 'leave'.

in reality id imagine everyone whos done this is still around in some shape or form, whether they post things or not.

some people just wanna take their toys n go home, to show they are hurt.

and most of the people who do it come back, most of the time within the same week. I've seen 2 such incidences this month of GBCW threads with a triumphant return less than a week later.

We have both been around for about the same time.

Just give it a breather and then come back when you've

a mind to. Sometimes being away from things gives us

a new perspective. Good luck.

24. Ahhh, yet another proclamation of ones departure. I love these.
Like their little bon voyage will somehow make my out look on life seem all that more philosophical.

How about just leaving and not doing the old "the queen is dead, long live the queen", BS.

I've seen well known posters do this and the many unknowns. We all reach our limit, we all need a break, we all need time off. But to go out with these little passion plays, really cracks me up.

Knock yourself out. LOLOLOL

26. I've left so many times...
but something has always brought me back. Sometimes it's a search to find the information I know is here. There is no way I could describe this place from a moment in time. It is so fluid depending on any number of things like current events or individual posters and their expertise in certain areas. When the gates fly open and this place is deluged by an army of rabid posters, and it's like feeding time at the Bronx Zoo, my time here has enabled me to amass a long list of links to like areas of interest. When the shit-flingers reign supreme, I don't want to be the kind of person that gets mired down in the cesspool with them. I'm cool for now, but no doubt I will be vacating again soon.

27. I don't have a strong sense of you, but
it's sad to see one of the best handles on this board disappearing.

I usually leave when I lose interest in politics and come back when I regain it. It's a given that it's full of assholes. The only difference for me is when it seems like there's something to hope for in addition.

Don't let the door etc. and have a a great time in the real world!
